anyone got a good reference, online or in print, for guitar building? I'm about to start building my first guitar and I wanted to gather some more/deeper knowledge first. thanks in advance.

IMO is the best place you'll find. Great, very helpful people there. If you don't have templates I strongly suggest Ron at guitarbuildingtemplates.com he has everything. If its not on his site just email him and you can design your own as well.

I'll go ahead and warn you now, it's heavily, heavily addicting. I've got six projects going on at the same time. Here's a couple I've done from scratch out of my garage just to show it is possible to build
A nice guitar without owning a whole wood shop or cnc machine. The only power tools I used on these were a drill press and a router.

I have less than $500 in each of these builds I posted. You can save a lot a cash DIY, just got to have the patience.

There's lots of good building diaries on YouTube as well.
Best of luck on the builds. Hope this helps. Let me know if I can help out.

wow, sick. nice work, man! I've been a furniture maker for about 5 years, and currently run a woodshop at an art school. I've got access to a full shop and a small CNC. My main question is how best to shape the necks and how to determine fret placement, but I imagine I'll find that info on that site.
