If I had to pick a more current band I would say The Black Crowes. One of my favorite rock bands ever. At times they remind me of a modern edged Rolling Stones (from a song perspective).
I can definitely get that vibe fore sure. Twice as hard....hard to handle....
it was a super breath of fresh air when it hit. Used to listen to them all the time in the 90's.

It's more than just from a song perspective. They are channeling the '68-'72 vibe of the Stones almost completely. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy The Black Crowes, and they bring some original elements, but when we are talking about the greatest rock band ever, I'll always go for the original rather than someone copping their thing really well...

Chad - have you ever sat down and listened to "Exile On Main Street" start to finish? I think you'd find it a revelation if you haven't... It's not really the more popular songs from the album that makes it so special. In fact, if you haven't, listen to all 5 of the albums I spoke about. If you have, disregard. :)

You know, as big of a music and rock and roll guy I am I hate to say I have never given the Rolling Stones much of a shot (runs and hides). I'm going to do it and report back. I definitely wouldn't consider the Crowes the greatest of all time but I love their modern take on rock and roll and the Stones. The older I get the more I begin appreciating so much of the 60s, 70s and early 80s stuff I listened to as a kid. I love modern music but I am a rock guy at heart.

Here are two Crowes songs that sound so much like the Stones to me that I really like. By Your Side is one of my favorite albums from them (you can tell my age as I still call them albums and not releases). :

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Queen...SO talented and multi dimensional and ahead of their time...

Stones or Zeppelin. AC/DC wouldn't even be close, but to each their own.

The Who, in their prime, would have been impossible to follow onstage.

Amazing albums they put out.

I'm voting Jimi Hendrix:\
Are You Experienced (1967)
Axis: Bold as Love (1967)
Electric Ladyland (1968)

Jimi Hendrix/Band of Gypsys
Band of Gypsys (1970)

Actually, It was The Who that had trouble following this...

I too love the black crowes. I would not say best rock band ever, but probably best band currently playing. Amazing how much better they have gotten with time
