He's technically great, but that only gets you an audience of guitar geeks. I don't find any feel or soul in anything he does. All very clinical and perfect. Which is fine if that equates to a great listening experience. Like Yngwie, I can only listen in small doses. If I need to hear a genius player, I prefer Shawn Lane.
Forget the Hendrix, Jeff Beck comparisons. He'll never achieve what they did if he plays another 30 years. Hendrix knew how to play, write a song, sing, put on a show. Beck's history speaks for itself.

Sometimes I have a hard time figuring out what we're talking about here. Anybody who believes that Govan's abilities aren't light years ahead of Jimi's is in denial and might even be suffering from some form of detachment.

No, technical ability actually is everything. It's a contest really. Playing with "feeling" is clearly just an excuse for laziness, and what most of us are saying as we praise Guthrie is that we are completely close-minded about wankers like Jimi and Beck because we want sterile precision. No middle ground, or room to appreciate each in their own context. I'm sure Guthrie feels this way too, because he's obviously got such a big ego.

There is very little Hendrix I own or like music wise.

Hey Joe is a revolution launching song. People picked up guitars and bands were inspired by it. JH was a game changer world wide. I respect that. GG and many other fretboard gymnasts are technically great. They just don't relate to many people. They are not world changers. And aside of the 1/100000 of the population of the world that is on guitar forums, nobody will hear about them. They are all great artists in their own right.
Taylor Swift will play in front of more people in a weekend than GG will in a decade. Of course no debate on skill level, unless being entertaining and connecting with 100 million people is a skill.
It is silly debate. Like what you like and own that shit. Fuck somebody else if they want to slag it.

I only chime in when I see Jimi mentioned. Dumb debate anyway. Different eras, different in every way. Wanna say GG has more skills than Jimi or Beck? Fair enough, but he'll never achieve what those guys did......and I can throw a ton of guitarists that achieved more, be it shows, albums, songs you can remember, etc.
GG's "songs" are built around his skills on the guitar. It's old news. Satriani beat him to it, again w/ better tunes, bigger following etc.
There will always be the next "NAMM Show" superstar, who tries to get a career, but winds up playing 50 seaters, doing seminars, shilling gear for a nickel. There's a few on this board.

I agree that it was certainly a different era. Back in the 60's & 70's musicians were for the most part uninhibited and free to create. I wonder what Jimi's level of success would be today if he came out with the Experience? 50 seat venues perhaps? Would he even get a record deal or radio airplay?
Folks in the music business will tell you that in todays environment timing, luck, and marketing(i.e. lots and lots of money) are the most important variables for success. In order to succeed, you need to push a fabricated image, along with a dose of feel good bullshit music, etc. for mass appeal to the brain-dead public. Talent means very little to nothing. Obviously the business is beyond pathetic at this point IMHO.
Guthrie and Jimi are/were both incredibly talented and gifted players/songwriters. I love and respect them both for what they have created and shared with the world. At the end of the day we all should just shut the fuck up and be thankful that these guys dedicated their lives to music and shared their respective talents with the rest of us...
