Is it true that the Sound City album, even though recording using the infamous board, was actually recorded to digital medium and not tape? If so, I think it qualifies as a major WTF? moment.

NO. I was there. it was tracked to tape.

Thanks

Ha, you photobombed Paul!

With the Foo's - the songs just bore the life out of me and sound contrived/predictable, but I think the production on their records is great and the Sound City documentary was very well done. Dave seems like a genuinely good dude and that's refreshing to see in this industry...

Wow man. It just goes to show you that people like different stuff. To me, the last Foo Fighters record was fucking huge sounding - natural, rich tones, and awesome production. Wonderful, fat, rich, woody guitar tones across the board, all types of sounds (high gain, mid gain, clean, acoustic, etc).

Opinions. . .everyone's got one.

how bout your opinion doesn't have a leg to stand on?
and that for you to say they sound Shitty is reflective of your lack of understanding of what goes into recording music.
Sonically they have made some of the best "sounding" records in the last decade.
but then again, that would mean you would have to know what a good recording sounds like.
If you were to say, "i dont like their music" I wouldnt have anything to say back.
but to say that they actually don't have a good Sound. is just wrong.
BTW the last time I checked Motley Crue's Dr. Feelgood has one of the best recordings of a band around.
It was the album that metallica name checked when they were looking for a sonic pallette for the black album.

I think Dave is a fine guitarist , and he plays great for his band. In fact I think the whole band sounds great!

I do not like the Foo Fighters either, I can't stand most of their songs (admittedly I only hear what was/is on the radio). That said I do think Dave is the read deal, he is what all musicians should aspire to as far as honesty and integrity in their music. I am sure if you like that style of music they are good and I am sure their songs are well written, it just doesn't work for me. I'd rather listen to Dream Theater or Iron Maiden..

Interesting bent in this thread.

Someone says they can't stand a particular band, I never disagree, that's personal musical preference. But when someone says a particular recording is "shitty" or the like and it's actually aces? I have to contest their stance.

Foos are a divisive band. You got the Nirvana Lovers/Grohl Haters, the Smear Crew, the "he's only famous cuz of Cobain" crew, yada yada. Fact is? He writes catchy tunes and they all have an incredible amount of energy and zing! Furthermore, they've captured that energy and zing in the production and recording and that means double :2thumbsup: to me.

Foos rock. I dig 'em. Thanks for keeping rock and roll alive and not going muzak on our asses.

Any movie put out by Grohl should be titled "Sounds Shitty" as in Foo Fighters sound shitty. Dave should go back to drums.

I can see that since you have such a successful band, and the sonic quality of your records is so incredibly outstanding that you would come to say this. Especially since You sold out Wembley.
Wait, not everyone on here has sold out Wembley and jammed with the Zep? I thought it was just part of the learning to play guitar thing... Huh...

Poison and Motley Crue sold out shows and had big records and tours at one time and they both sound shitty too. blah blah blah again ALL MY OPINION.

Whoa whoa whoa WHOA. Hold on up there sport, the Ultimate Guitar forums are a few blocks south, past Metal Elitism Ave and Music Douche Way... So walk on home boy, this forum's cool cause it's full of guys who dig 80's, extreme, blues, rock, funk, jazz, instrumental, classical, etc without a bunch of bullshit people saying an artist sucks. You know what? Fuck you. Dave Grohl is an accomplished musician and songwriter who spent a lot of time to get where he is, and some punk thinks he has the right to write him off? Motley Crue went through a lot of shit and put in their dues to get to where they are, same as Poison, same as even Lady fucking Gaga.
Do I dig Lady Gaga's music? No, not particularly. Do I dig Black Veil Brides? I can say only one song of theirs has caught my ears as something I'd put on my stereo... But does that mean they are shit? Most of the time on most other places ya, it means everything they've put into it and accomplished goes out the window simply cause they are shit. But not here, we're all musicians with different musical backgrounds and interests and even though we may not get or really like something doesn't mean we fucking write it off because we know what they went through, being there ourselves.

Fuck you and your elitism and grow the fuck up.

The Motley record with Corabi was made more than 20 years ago and still has one of the best guitar sounds and drum sounds recorded ever.
The last Foo record was done on analog to go back to the simpler approach, no extra frills and thrills, you have only 24 tracks, cut all the fat off. Let's just keep what's really worth. They have not used analog because it's better, but this way hey cannot cheat on adding extra tracks. I was not really into the Foos but that last record was great.
Who gives a shit if it's analogue or digital if you are a gigging musician? It needs to fulfill a role in the musical context, needs to be light, reliable and easy to set up and should like how it sounds.
Of course if you're doing 2 gigs per year or none, it's a major factor :) Ask a Carpenter (pun intended :D ) which is the better hammer to use. :) It will not be the hammer, but the hands making the difference.
Grow up. Think. Play. Gig.
