Hey guys/gals, just discovered Hawk with Doug Marks.

Really good guitar playing! Really like his tone!

My band opened for them at their first show ever at the Roxy. You can see their backdrop behind us. They had some money behind them and we weren't allowed to use our backdrop that night, which sucked, because it almost looks like we're Hawk? :

Absolutely horrible band with bad songs, but Doug was a really good guitar player...

 and

Awesome! Is that you on the right with the star?

I remember taking that hit parader clip out of Doug's metal method course, going to the post office and getting a money order for like 70 bucks.

Waited for I don't know how long for it to get all the way to me in NY..

When all 6 courses, cassette tapes and booklets, came in the mail, I locked myself in my room and went to town.

Looking back, as a teenager in the 80's, I loved those days man!!

In 04, I went out to LA to visit Mrs. Rhoads and family, over that week, I went up and down the strip and felt that vibe that I always pictured as a kid.

Very special time and place.

Nope, I'm all the way over on the other side past the bass player...

I see now.

I disagree that the songs and band are horrible!

Anyway, any suggestions on getting Doug's lead tone?

It's very similar to David Chastain

That's the great thing about music - there's something for everyone.

I learned an absolute TON from those Metal Method cassette tapes #5-8. They were Metal Theory, Metal Licks, Van Halen style licks and Randy Rhoads style licks.

I lived in Chicago, and I got all the Doug Marks newsletters and followed the forming of his band Hawk through the newsletters. Shortly after, I moved to LA and I saw Hawk at one of their first gigs at the Waters Club.

I learned a ton from Doug Marks and am thankful for what I feel was a great product for the time.

When did you move to LA? I'm pretty sure the picture I posted was from late '85 and they recorded their first album in '86...

BTW - I'm not bagging on Doug at all. He's an excellent player and I learned a lot from some of those tapes too. I just didn't like Hawk...

Steve

Ah, Metal Method. I had the Theory one and I think a licks one. I entered that original hot licks contest, sent in my cassette and tabbed out licks and won 3rd place, I think was 25 bucks. I had a few of questions published in the book about the music business he had, can't recall the name of it but I still have it around here. Good times back then for me, no worries in life, no real responsibilities other than wood shedding

I moved here in '85 and saw Hawk after their album came out.
