I have a chance to trade my Helios for on with depth and WH mod and it's mint. Thoughts?

I'm a fan of the SLO, but if you aren't totally taken by the Helios....do it. You can always get 2500 for it if you need to sell. They seem to be pretty consistent value wise used. But if you really love the Bogner then keep it. I always have an amp or two that I regret selling.....

Can't go wrong with either but the SLO is that special amp !!

I have both but play my Helios 90% of the time.
But ....the question is....if you could only have one?? ;)

If that's the question.....then Helios. It has a better loop that's footswitchable, various switchable options, and EL34's for that Marshall tone!

For some reason I didn't get reply notifications on this post I made and completely forgot about it.

I had the chance to trade my Helios for a SLO with all the options but ended up passing when I received some feedback from a couple of owners of all option SLO's. They have had both stock and full option SLO's and much preferred the stock......even without the depth option. Also I forgot the loop does suck on the SLO. Mine did for sure, but I ended up using a Intellifex. I have no doubt I could reposition the loop after the MV. Should be easy with flying leads.

BTW I still have the Helios ;)

Ya, had it been stock might have been a different situation.

I'm one of those rare cases who never gelled well with the SLO tone for my wants and needs. But man, in the right hands, it can be magic.

I'm watching all "Helios" threads as I'm fence sitting Helios/JJ...

Time will tell.
:salute:

I have an all option SLO, it's called the "5 option". It has a half power switch and a toggle for effects loop bypass. The effects loop is iffy with certain it pedals, mainly with my Strymon timeline. Getting ready to send this amp to Dave to get his FX loop fix. All report I've read on this are great, and I think it's around 300$. As for the amp itself, it sounds fantastic. I had a second SLO with no mods, stock to the bone. I was going to keep the one that sounded the best, sell the other. Spent the whole weekend A/B'ing the two and the consensus: they sounded absolutely identical. No difference to these ears. I sold the stock and kept the 5.

I'm a huge Cantrell fan..........

Whose better to demo a Cantrell amp than Jerry Cantrell himself.......

Watched/Listen to the Freidman Cantrell vid.........

Was not impressed AT ALL and I was shocked as I thought I was going to fall over in love with that amp. Way to fuzzy sounding to me. Maybe he had too much gain dialed in. The Helios will get you old school face lift tones in spades.

Oh, fuck, that was easy...
SOLD!!

With the mods off, the SLO can be stock according to Mike Soldano.

I had a stock SLO and a year later one with the Depth/Haynes/DeMartini mods. They sounded the same to me with the mods off. They were a 2002 and a 2012. If you get an older one from the late 80s it might be slightly different but this amp is one of the more consistently sounding amps ever built, no matter what year/mods you get. Helios vs SLO? That's a nice dilemma to have!

Some guy with a stock SLO must of been jealous of the SLO with options so decided to make up a rumor about it not sounding as good as stock. I build amps and if wired right a few switching capabilities aren't going to effect the tone. When you get into a host of relays and complicated switching then that's a different story.

I have to admit I'm liking the stock SLO better these days. My current one has Depth only and I have it turned to zero (out of the circuit) 95% of the time.

The Helios is a great amp but I'm changing my vote back to the SLO. If you get the right Delay pedal the loop is not really an issue when playing live!

So if you had to sell one and keep the other?

It's all what you hear in your own head and feel when you play the amp... Everyone hear has had tons of experience with these great amps and are all unique and different in many ways.. But also very much the same. It all comes down to your choice.
I've owned a lot of amp some a number of times, Bogner Soldano Wizard Diezel Roccaforte Mesa Marshall Metropoulos Demeter Fender Aiken and more I can't think of lol..
The only amp that has made me smile every time I play it is an SLO so 7th time is a charm for me.
Just my 2cents
Cheers
Ian
