Help me decide axe fx II or two notes torpedo live.

Hey guys. I have found myself in a situation where noise has become an issue. I sold a majority of my pedals thinking i was going to get an axe fx II. I own a 5150 III 50 watt a matching 2x12 cab. The 5150 III 50 watt is not a perfect amp but i do enjoy it. If i want to get the axe fx i have to sell the 5150 III and 2x12 to justify it. $2500 is very steep price to pay for the axe fx II and i am thinking i wont be able to sell the 5150 III and cab unless i take a huge hit on the price through shipping. My other option is to get the torpedo studio and buy back some of the pedals i no longer own. This way i will still have an option when i want to play out with friends. If i buy the axe fx i will need a power amp and speaker system at some point. Not to mention a foot controller.

I wondering what is truly going to be less expensive over time and what will be the easiest and most fun to play with. I will mostly be playing through headphones and the headphone out on the evh is not cutting it! The fractal AX8 would also be a cool option since it would handle my effects/amp sounds through headphones and i could still keep my 5150 III for playing out. I am not willing to wait that long though. There is also the tweaking factor...i owned an ultra back in the day and i hated dealing with tweaking. I don't know if that is still a problem with these units. I also don't want to buy a $2500 unit and only find myself playing through 1 or 2 different amp types. I may sound like i am answering my own question but i would love some feedback. Thank you!

If you don't like tweaking I can't imagine and AXE II would be any different from your Ultra experience.

Axe-FXII has a load of amps & cabs & FX, records direct, direct FOH for gigging... Will need some powered monitors or a poweramp and cab(s) to push some air.

The 2N is aces if you've got the amps, and do everything else as you would normally - at least - this is what I am gathering.

When I return to civilization, I've got a couple heads on the [immediate] to-buy list, along with a 2N Studio.

I've got a small warehouse of cabs to move air if and when needed ;)

I own an axefx ultra and the torpedo live.

If you have an amp you love and easily want that sound - get the torpedo, no question.

If you want the sound of VALVES, use an amp with torpedo.
Does the axefx sound amazing?..yes, does it sound like a valve amp?.. no.

If you want to tweak/edit and have a million options then go axefx route.

If I had to choose between the 2, I'd go with my amp, the torpedo and some pedals and be done.

What I like most about the torpedo is the simplicity.
I use an ownhammer IR (which means I can't even change the mic position, it just sounds good as it is!) and use my head, that's it.

I feel like the axe fx II is overkill and expensive. I am going to pull the trigger on the live and get a few pedals i can tweak knobs on. Can i run my 50 watt evh with the live no problem?

No issues running your 50w evh.

I'm running a 120w 5150 with no issues.

You should run your amp at the same volume you would usually with a cab when using the torpedo.

I don't think i ever got the thing over half way! Last question. Can i load the same quality high resolution irs into the torpedo? Can you even tell the difference? And all i need is a speaker cable correct?

The two notes website specifies what type of IR (WAV) files should be loaded.

I've just used the ownhammer ones and followed the instructions and I'm very happy with the result.

Yes use a speaker cable to connect your amp to the torpedo.

I use the Torpedo Live with my Peavey Ultra 60 head along with a ton of free Irs I loaded up. Strictly for recording, but it's nice to have an actual amp if I ever start gigging again.

My addiction I deal with now is volume...ear splitting volume of my Marshall through 2 4x12 cabs. I don't gig that loud, with one or two outdoor festivals the exception. But home alone I get my fix. Until a modeler can give me that exact feeling, I will always have a #1 amp. If I recorded I would save up for an Axe or Kemper but I don't.....and even then the two notes products work great from all I gather. One thing about the Axe is you have to get specific power amps that work best, certain speaker cabs...it becomes a 4K quest if you get a new Axe II and want to gig it. That's coming from a couple guys that have owned them, and also own some of the best tube amps made. Great product I'm sure..but live is how I need it to work best and that's too much coin for me to TRY to get it to sound real.

It seems like if you love your amp and want to be able to use that amp direct then the Torpedo is the best choice. Usually when people buy the Axe-FX II to replicate a specific amp they are let down.

The Axe is better at having a giant tool box to create anything you want. I dial up things that dont really sound like any amp in particular, and would require an amp + tons of outboard EQ and such to replicate.

I have thought about switching to the Torpedo a few times, but it seems to go against what I like. I would have to have an amp, effects pedals, pedal power supplies, noise gates, a mile of cables, a rack case for the torpedo, etc.... it all sounds like a huge mess. I like the fact that I have all that sitting in a little box in a rack.

If you didn't like tweaking the Ultra then you'd hate tweaking the 2. Torpedo and be done wit it.

Another cool thing about the Torpedo are all of the power amp simulation options. When not using a "real" amp I like to use AMT preamp pedals with the Torpedo's power amp simulation. I also disable the power amp and cab simulation on my POD HD 300 and run that thru the Torpedo as well.

What if you want the sounds of a JJ, Herbert, Mark V and a Twin Jet and a Fender twin and don't have those amps and really can't afford all the above, plus the price of the Torpedo, isn't like an AxeFX or a Kemper the next best thing?

I think I would enjoy one amp with three channels sounding the best than a bunch of options that may not stack up as well.
