Hetfield tone is in this picture, look closely, note the Marshall amps, and the Quad Preamp, don't forget the White Gibson Explorer. And a solid right hand for down strokes  Think he used a Duncan Distortion in the bridge, before EMG's.

Thanks for the input. I'm not per say looking for the Hetfield sound I just used it as a reference cause I love it. I'm just looking for something that will work with my playing and bring the best out.

Hey James...I am pretty sure my buddy has a Port city 2 x 12 I could probably get him to let you check out (they are located in Wilmington...if you wanna take a road trip some day)....and you are welcome to jack around with my Deizel if you want...(but it doesnt fit in my mustang brudda...LOL) Also, if you wanna play around with my SLO, I can let you snag it for a while if you like, but it looks like you are kinda set on amps...

That be awesome.

It's just been a while since I've really experimented around, the past few years it's pretty much been business as usual and just doing my thing but it's time for some fresh angles on it. It's sometimes hard to really take my time and go through things with clients around. I'm gonna spend the day mixing and matching, I'm gonna try some of the suggestions, I also have a couple of overdrive pedals that I never use, I cracked them out and am going to hear what the amps sound like for rhythms with a little OD in front of them. I will upload clips today that you guys can import and do blends and tell me what you think.

James, that Freidman sounds fantastic....GAS inducing even. That amp really seems to compliment your black LP perfectly. The rackto sounds beastly as well. Those two together has to be perfection. The Diezel sounds nice as well but the attack is just so round and rubbery sounding vs the others. Maybe just bring the Diezel into the mix during heavy strummed chorus type parts  . With all that great stuff it seems that you will have a hard time NOT sounding great. Awesome vids, thanks!

Thanks man.

I've been running all the combos and I'm really liking the Marshall and Boogie. The VH4 is heavier sounding but not as slicey sounding. I have the bass and deep on like 2 on the VH4, I could probably even stand to drop them a hair, back off the gain and open up the top. But I do love the Marshall/Boogie combo.

For the Racto I blended 421 (vintage) / 57 and PR20
For the Marshall I blended 421 (new) / 57 and PR20

Didn't like the M160 at all really. I'm not a ribbon guy, I have owned a ton of ribbon mics, all the usual suspects and they just don't ever do it for me. I like the 57 and 421 around the same level and the pr20 brought up to taste, it seems like around 60% of the volume of the other 2 does the trick. I like the center focus the PR20 adds.

Yeah that 160 sounded anemic. Weird though I LOVE my 121 and hated 57s. Probably a big part of that was running EMGs which are bright and can get a bit fizzy. I had to watch out using 57s(a bit bright and grainy), but it sounds good on your rig  That black LP just sits in the "right sonic pocket" IMO. Very balanced and nice. Did you ever track to tape using that burst? If so did the tape "tame" its top end to perfection?

I wrote a new song today with my new guitar buddy out here Johnny. We are tracking drums Tuesday and then I'm gonna do up some heavy guitars with all I've learned up to this point. Pretty pumped, I will tell you ahead of time the song is a little dark, it's been a rough year with my dad dying and now my brother died 2 weeks ago. So the tune is for them and about what I've gone through this year. I really wanted to write a song that was more riffy and groovy syncopated but I didn't, this is kind of more wall of sound legato. The vocals are pretty high and I haven't been singing much, so I'm gonna start working my voice out tomorrow. I'm excited I think the tune is heavy and almost darkly romantic, kind of Evanescence meets Operation Mind Crime. Anyway I will post as I go so you guys can see and hear the goods. I have been destroyed emotionally since my brother died that's why when I got back from Florida 2 weeks ago I jumped into guitar sounds, I needed something to focus on other then what was going on inside of me. This thread has helped through some rough stuff guys. My brother gave me his Taylor acoustic and I'm gonna use it on the tune. RIP Ralph Daniel Lugo.

Here's bounce of the new tune, no mix at all just level bounce. Heavies are the Sunburst with the Duncon Custom with 250k pots. Absolutely killer sounding guitar now. Just what the doctor ordered:

Great stuff James!!!!! Love the fact that your neighbor was outside and you had a nice little talk with her. Loving all the tones and progress!!

Sorry to hear about your brother James. The song is coming along great.

Sounding great James! It's cool that the 250k pot did the trick on the Les Paul.

It really did make a difference, I think that guitar is bright naturally and the 250 tamed it just a hair. The heavies on the track are the sunburst.
