Help with not annoying my neighbors. Hot Plate? Maybe?

Quoted for truth. Had two different THD's, and tried a bunch of others, and they all sucked the tone right out of the amp. No good.
 
I have just ordered a hot plate to run with my Herbert.
So here is my question about this.
Will my amp sound better at bedroom level (just pass the threshold of producing sound) running a hot plate or ala natural?
I am hoping that the hot plate will improve my low volume tone. I understand that it will never be as good as the amp cranked!

IMO, for bedroom level the Herbert will sound better without the Hot Plate. I have a Hot Plate that I use occasionally with my Ecstasy and JVM. When cranking the amp to power tube saturation, then attentuating it down to bedroom levels, it gets a bit fizzy to me. I haven't tried it with Herbert-it would take a LOT of attentuation to tame 180 watts down to bedroom level, and it isn't worth the tube wear to me. I think most of the Herbert's excellent tone is generated in the preamp, and it's just not an amp that would much benefit from a Hot Plate, IMO, unless you are just using it to shave a few dB's (the -4 or -8dB modes). Different story with some Marshall's, especially non MV Marshalls, and I do like the Hot Plate with the Ecstasy in Plexi mode. Tone is very subjective though, and it can't hurt to try, other that a little more tube wear.

You were right on the money! My Herbet sounds better without the attenuator. At the -4db setting it is not bad, but at that setting the sound reduction is minimal. As the sound reduction increases, my amp sounds more and more like a cheap solid state amp. I guess I will have to try it out on my Marshall!

I have an Utimate Attenuator/Ho attenuator..the UA is made by Ho in Canada and put their name on it and charge more for it. Anyway, the as stated in an above post it is more of reamp and is as transparent as it gets. It is very good and is not supposed to harm the amp in any way. I very much recommend it.

Yeah I ended up not getting the hot plate and got a Randall 12C Isolation cab with a V 30. Just had to put some acoustic foam inside and using a Senheizzer e906, I am getting some really good recording tones for the album we are making. I would recommend then Randall even though every one raves about the Grendell. I was gonna get the Grendell but heard to many horror stories of wait time and the owner so I talked a bunch with some one on HC who has one and was impressed with his clips. Plus they are available with free shipping and 30 day return policy if you don't like it from music123.com Key is to use acoustic foam inside and a e906 IMO. It does not have a goose neck so you cant fuck around with different mic's like SM57's. you would have to install one or two your self. The mic pole just sticks out right over the speaker so the e906 IMO works best with it. Thanks guys
