If this person is not 100% sure that they are going to get back into playing, I would just put together a L6 Spider Valve rig with a decent guitar in the $500 range. If they start with that and dig it and want to continue, then I would upgrade and go high quality.

I think that the Axe fx route is pretty good, but here is a bit more of a budget system that will still be killer.

interesting that no one thinks my idea of a Alchemist combo or the JMD-1 combo is a good idea at all.
It is hard buying something for someone with so many different possibilities, and so many different directions to go, when they are not there to say what they like and don't like.
his instructions were to buy what I would buy...but then again, i dont think think i should buy what I would buy, as I would tell him to get a Mark V combo or something like that...just thinking since i am in L.A. and he is in Hawaii, and I have to ship the stuff i get locally to Hawaii, and can't show him how things will work all together, i am trying to make it as simple as possible.
I shot him an email with some different guitars and such and am waiting to see what his preferences are.
