All the stuff you hear about the QR NOT being good at low volumes is nonsense. I use it as my practice amp volumes for crying out load! Does it sound better cranked? Of course! All tube amps do. But people make it sound like it's unuseable at low volumes and that's not true at all.

I knew this thread would ferret out the weird mids police.

Relative to the typical group of amps people will always compare it too it's less low volume friendly imo. Amps that are more saturated with more give and smoother master volume tapers appeal to alot of home players out there it seems.

A simple volume box in the loop gave you the needed smoother taper to find a lower volume easily, and a boost pedal helped for lower volumes as well. It was a good move Scott made adding the loop volume on the newer models.

But some amps don't need any outboard stuff for mouse fart playing, so people label the QR as not being low volume friendly.

I can think of a couple of things that could lead people to think it sounds like poo at low volumes
1) They unknowingly have the fx loop engaged. As a QR owner, you know that at low volumes the FX loop sounds like crap.
2) They don't crank up the solo boost. This is something Shredder75 told me to do, and that brings alot of meat back into the sound with the volume off.
3) They don't run their mids high enough.

Cranking the solo boost helped but wasn't nearly as useful as having a volume box in the loop with the loop engaged, a much smoother taper could be achieved that way and the undesireable sound of the loop at low volumes was negated as you could smooth it out by turning up the master on the front end and controlling the overall volume level with the volume box.

The amp is extremely middy even with the weird mid zeroed out.

+1 to that vrad, I got my mids cranked and my solo boost is anywhere from 9 o'clock to dimed ;)

I can go on and on and dispute what I consider questionable findings with the Quick Rod, or I can say listen to Vlads clip he posted above with his newer Quick Rod.

Or listen to this clip I recently did with my '08 Quick Rod:

https://www.soundclick.com/util/getplaye ... 58212&q=hi

or this clip I did with a vintage single coils loaded strat, a DOD 250 Overdrive and my Quick Rod:

https://www.soundclick.com/util/getplaye ... 43861&q=hi

or these clips I did with the QR:

https://www.soundclick.com/util/getplaye ... 99483&q=hi

https://www.soundclick.com/util/getplaye ... 99475&q=hi

Or we could talk about some possibly neglected, in need of servicing or not dialed in the way I would have done it Quick Rod in an amp room at a Guitar Center.

The newest Quick Rod is even better than mine because it has a volume knob installed on the loop and it even sounds killer for low volume playing, the number one complaint all along about the Quick Rod has been overcome.
Dude, great playing and sound  . You should send those clips to Scott to put up on the website. Great representation of the Splawn sound. What speakers were those clips through? I've got a Competition that I play through various cabs. Splawn 4x12 with Manowar/Govs x pattern. 2x12 with H75 Scumbacks, Marshall 4x12 with V30/H30 x pattern and they all kill . I can't get a bad tone out of that amp. They'll bury me with that fucker! :D

Yeah and it really shouldn't be a loaded question. I can't speak for the other Marshall modded amps that you mentioned, and I didn't. But apparently because I chimed in to give my 2 cents on an amp that I've owned for a couple years, that makes me the Splawn Police or the Weird Mids Police... To most normal ADULTS, that's called being helpful.. .but whatever...

You find it odd being associated with weird mids with that big ass picture in your signature (and avatar).

Whatever man... We all know you weren't happy with the QR. The dude asked about the amp, I told him about it. I didn't speak to the other makers he mentioned. I have no experience with them. I posted a clip of what the amp can do at low volumes. I know the QR and I know how to dial it in, so I posted some suggestions and observations. I don't understand why that automatically brings YOU into the equation with the whole "Splawn Police" or "Weird Mids Police" thing? What's the right etiquette here? What would make YOU happy? I'm curious?

I wouldn't take it so seriously, I'm just fucking around for the most part and throwing my opinion inbtween the b.s. .

I don't hate the QR, I just didn't play it much after I stopped using it in a band situation and became a basement dweller. I thought it really shined live and really took no issue with it in that capacity. At home though it just wasn't as inspiring for me personally, but strangely enough I have a 2203 that I actually don't mind using at home with a boost pedal. Can't figure that one out.

I still have a Splawn btw, a Nitro. I actually prefer it for the old school 80's stuff even though it seems marketed towards newer style players. Another oddity...

The best thing I can say about having Marshalls vs. having the Splawn Quick Rod is that the tubes in my Marshalls are lasting forever. I mean literally. The tubes in my Marshalls will last 50 years at this pace because since I got my first Quick Rod the Marshalls don't even get switched on anymore. Not pictured is the '72 Super Lead that the Splawn relegated to living in my closet now. The tubes in that one will not only last forever but it never even gets dusty anymore.

I think the Splawn could be labeled the "Marshall Preserver" at least at my house.

I don't play my other amps much either since getting the QR, its even my late night pick for low volumes with the loop volume trick. I have a egnater tol coming that I wanted to check out but I think I am going to sell me other two amps. I just don't even bother plugging them other than to use them because I feel bad about them sitting there. They usually get put away shortly into playing and I plug in the QR again.

I feel like eating a tangerine or making a pumpkin pie.

Taking the 'orange county' thing a bit too far maybe? :D

I had a couple splawns and one was a qr and the other was a comp with el34. Both sounded awsome and when I used the comp live I got alot of compliments. I loved that amp in a band setting, it sounded awsome. The ice picky part really depends on who is dialing in the amp and what speakers you use. I don't have any probs getting a decent tone from splawns.
I personally am not inlove with the low vol tones but that is because I was used to playing mine loud or with a band and once you hear what it can do then lower vol isn't that great.
I guess to most people it's a great low vol sounding amp but I liked other amps better and if I could only play it low I wouldn't own one. Hearing it cranked just sounds way better to me. Scott builds awsome amps and the quickrod is my fav of the lineup.

Just played a pretty big concert at some church. The soudman LOVED my amp and the tone I was getting! He said it after soundcheck, and then approached me after the show and had to tell me again what an awesome sounding amp I had  :)

That always brings a smile to my face

BTW...I put in these new Sino tubes and they freakin rule in my QR!!
