Great job James. Sorry I could not make it. My window of time was just not enough for that event. I am so happy on your coverage of the shootout. I almost feel as I was there.
What is the wattage on the M75s ?

wow...just a ridiculous effort put forth, pretty freaking awesome. I'm guessing that after your head clears a bit and you keep listening to these clips a new "todays favorite" will emerge. There's no way you can keep real perspective up front after playing so many amps one after the other - all you could do was to just keep pushing and get everything recorded and come back to it later.

My hats off to you, the bar has been raised for amp geeks

Again great job to those involved. Are there going to be cd's available from this ala the pickup shootout?

Aloha, Rob.

65 watts

Man listening to the "Marsha" sure reminds me alot of Jake's tone on the Badlands albums...good stuff.

whoa! this is the coolest thing ever. I am a big Bogner fanboy so I'm maybe biased but I thought the 2 Bogners (Uber and XTC) were the best. Very complex and big sounding. I did really enjoy the '71 kitchen sink amp as well. Especially for the Balls to the Wall tone. Nicely done!

I'm listening again. I kinda f'ed up the Herbert settings, I had the treble and presence to high. I just looked at the amp. I was trying to bring out the top end, maybe my ears were tired or I was listening to so many brighter amps. I'm wondering if I could get the darker warmth with the Herbert that's on the VH4? Talked to a guy in Torrence with a VH4 mint with new JJ tubes for sale... Oh no! and he just sold an old Marshall with a Jose mod....f**k.

Hey James, I'm sure that's exactly what happened to you. You where listening to brighter amps for too long and the ears got tired.

why don't you make another Herbert clip??

oh, btw, get a VH4 :D

I just did, I got the Herbert close but the voicing is different. I got the Herbert sounding better then the original track. My engineer was listening and thought they sounded so close it didn't matter but it's a pretty big difference to my ear. I think I'm gonna do it and get the VH4.

I think you're REALLY gonna dig the VH4, more so than the Herbert. At least from what I've been listening from your playing.

The herbert is a GREAT amp, but it's more modern sounding and more compressed than the VH4. The VH4 has a very "vintagy" characteristic.

and one you get it, please, dime the gain on channel 2, pull the bright switch on and set the treble to 2:00 and mids to 3:00, bass 1:00 (presence and deep on 1:00) be ready :D

I think so too. The Herbert is great to stand in front of and play but it can be tough to record. I've struggle with it over the years.

well don't know about that because I don't own one, but I can see where you're coming based on it's characteristics. Besides all that compression is a bit hard to get rid of if you're playing pure rock.....I can see it being EXCELLENT for metal though.

I had an Einstein, and it's more loose and less compressed than the Herbert I've been told, but channel two has the same issue (which is the channel that leans more towards the Herbert voicing). It was GREAT for hi-gain...but for mid gain stuff it could be less compressed.

The VH4 on the other hand....now that's the Gem right there.....that's Peter Diezels genious moment.

it's NOT for everyone, but for those of us who's for....it's a god's send amp! :D

The thing I like is it sounds normal to my ear.

Sounds normal. That's what I thought when I played the Einstein and I also love the Marshall voicing. If you ever get a chance, play one. I know it's not the same as playing back your recording but you'll know if you like it. VH4 is not too shabby either.

Speaking of playback are you mainly listening on a home stereo to judge amps or on your monitors?

Cause the Herbert sounds better in the mix to me so I think I'm only hearing high treble and mids well. Don't know if better PC speakers or bookshelf speakers with a power amp would give me a truer representation of these amps. Or maybe cheap monitors would be needed like Mackie MR5's or something in that range.

James,

Any chance of you making this available via CD like you did last time?

Just grabbed a VH4:

Has some JJ EL34's I think. It doesn't sound as good as the one from the shootout. Not sure what was in the one I used, I'm inquiring. It lacks the low end and the hi fi sparkle, it sounds more English. What's the best tubes for the VH4?

Damn James, talk about GAS!!!!

Now where is the Uberschall that you must have!!!

Bravo James!!!! Thanks so much for doing this!!!! My favorites were:

Marshall Jose Modded SLP :worship:
Soldano SLO
MOD100
20th Ecstasy/Shiva
VH4

Thanks Again...
Todd

it depends what you want. I love 6L6, but most hi-gain guys prefer EL34 in the VH4. Maybe you need a fresh quartet of tubes. I'd change the preamp tubes too.

Btw, before swapping tubes, check the bias, could be a little cold.

There's a switch on the VH4 (could be inside) that lets you choose between EL34 or 6L6....make sure you're on the EL34.

the bias should be 35mA per tube

The VH4 takes KT88s and 6550s as well.......

I ran a combo of 6l6 and el34 in my Einstein. Can you do that in the VH4?

Enjoy the amp.
