IMO, the SLO is no benchmark. It's a sound. I've owned 8-10 since '92. It always comes down to the same thing. I prefer other amps. The Clean ch is ok, the Crunch blows, and the Lead w/ the gain past noon starts to get muddy and undefined.
The amp remains the same. 80's tone. No refinements of which could have improved the amp immensely. Nope, same old misplaced loop and dated tone.

When I first got my Landry, I plugged it into the same cab I had been using w/ my SLO. It was a revelation and the SLO got shitcanned.

Why spend 4K? Look what you can get nowdays w/ 4K if you wanted to buy new.

I agree but the Landry. Is now about $3300 as well.... one of the priciest high gainers out there

Big Landry fan though!

I noticed! I really lucked out getting #1 of the M models w/ 6550's for 2k.

I love my SLO. It was the most I have ever spent on an AMP, bought my used (I try to buy eveything used) but I honestly feel like it is worth the price I paid and I am sure I could get back out of it what I paid if I ever needed to sell it.

One of the reasons I love it is because as simple as it is, it can do just about anything. I love my Hot Rod 50+ too. Bought that first and then got gas for the SLO. It is an awesome amp in its own right, but the SLO is magic to me.

Would be willing to spend on the new price, probably not, but I wouldn't pay the new price on a LP R9 either, but I was comfortable with what I spend on it used. I am just glad that there are folks who are able and willing to buy new and sell so there is a market for the gear I love that is closer to a price I can afford. :D

I should add, that I don't think the price is to high - just that I probably wouldn't be willing/able to spend that much. If the price is too high, the market will decide. I think Soldano's are actually a value if you like the tone, you have an Amp that should last a life time, without the latest update coming out every 6 months to try to sell the faithfull the latest greatest version.

Exactly.....sums it up perfectly. Not made in China, nothing subbed out, no cheap component substitution to keep prices down, same guys making them the same way they did 25 years ago. Whether or not one likes the SLO, it is an institution.

Hell, every other amp builder is kicking out kitted variants of modded Marshall or Fender circuits at $3500-$4500 with a warranty that barely makes it to the house. Let some guy play a few riffs on a 8 string in Drop Z and or draw in an endorsement from a touring gear whore looking for the next free ride and people go ape shit. So, not too sure what all the fuss is about here about SLO pricing.

It's pretty simple:

You need $4200 for a new SLO.
You need less $ for a used SLO.
You need not a SLO for great tone.*
You need a SLO for the exact SLO tone.

*Sorry for the Yoda lexicon

One thing i wondered - SLO is an acronym for super lead overdrive. Why do people insist on calling it "an SLO" when "an super lead overdrive" is wrong?

Because they're referring to it by the initials- "an S-L -O" not "a SLOW" :D

How is this thread still going?

LMAO!!! I've heard people call it a "SLOW" before

If he sells all that he builds, it's not overpriced no matter what anybody's opinion may be. If they fail to sell at that price, he will make adjustments accordingly by lowering the prices and/or building fewer. At the point where it is no longer a profitable venture, production will cease. Economics 101...not debatable...your opinion means shit :D

And it's not about "sounding 3x better since it costs 3x as much" :jerkit: As mentioned earlier, there are quality and economy of scale components to the equation, as well as a "cost of entry" for whatever the marginal tonal differences exist that you simply can't get anywhere else. Gotta have "that" sound? Buck up. Don't need it? Move along.

Sorry guys. I call mine the "slow", not S-L-O. Further proof I'm uncool, I guess.

Seems that causes the used one to increase in price also :gethim:  one day…..one day….

Sorry, but a VH4 is a 4 channel beast. So many options and incredible effects loops.
The only thing it has in common with the SLO might be the price.

Killing me. I had a VH4, still have the SLO

Used my last one in a cover band for 2 years, and it covered a ton of ground. Definitely wasn't a one trick pony for me.

What is the Demartini mod? What does he get tweaked in his amps? Always thought he made those amps sound killer.... in Lugo's amp shootout `though, Lynch's SLO sound like shiite.

It's the same as the scoop mod and is only on the clean /crunch channel. It is a variant of the SRV mod at 400 instead of 700 Hz. On the clean it gives me more blackface tonality and in crunch obviously scoops the mid range. Soldano doesn't do it on the lead channel because they feel it sounds poor there.
Thank you. I was wondering this also.
Are you Freak'n kidding??? a SRV mod on a SLO for more of a Blackface tone? Fuk'n A!!! Now I have to get one :D Damn sounds like a perfect amp
