Great info and such a simplistic setup .
I can remember over the years they would claim Angus & Mal could tell
the difference between NOS tubes or whatever the new offerings were at that time.
Guess they get to slum like the rest of us and use plane ol JJ's in all those touring heads.

Interesting how they go through so many old Marshalls! I guess even those '87 reissues are over 30 years old, not the most reliable things! I also think the master volumes killed the tone on the last few albums.

That was awesome. Good to see an interviewer who knows what gear things we want to hear about, too.
But with all that setup, and as many heads as they go through on tour, I can understand why bands are going to an AxeFX or Kemper solution for touring, just to keep the cost lower. I think Metallica's live tone has suffered a bit since the swap, (though I haven't seen them, just the videos) but the extra expense of "an amp guy" and the shipping on all that stuff has to build-up over a tour.

This was great and super informative. I have a question about that Japanese made voltage regulator thing, the Kiukisui or whatever. They say they are running the amps off of this unit at 236V. So this is like a voltage regulator/attenuator? And I thought they are in the US, so maybe the like the Marshalls set to the UK voltage on the back of the amps and then use the Kuikisui to bump up the US voltage which would be at 120. Anyone that can explain whether I am figuring this wrong,,,it would be appreciated. Maybe they are In the UK. Most Marshalls have a selector that you can select the voltage, whether UK or US, on the back of the amp. I found it very interesting that they are running and setting the amps at UK voltages because they prefer the enhancement in tone it gives. Or maybe I've got it all wrong.

Edit- Holy Shit! The Kikusui PCR 4000M shown in this rundown is $15k+. Ouch. When the guy said its a little expensive, he wasn't kidding.

They are using the power conditioner to allow them to use the British voltage regardless of venue or country. They then do not have to change bias setting etc due to voltage changes.

Not into AC/DC but it's cool that they are rocking it old school and refusing to change as it clearly works!
Even with the guitars, pick ups replaced and a set of 9s... that's the way to do it! haha

Angus sounded awesome all night & had ridiculous energy! Axl was great as well and he is the reason the set is like 85% Bon Scott era tunes! They played for about 2hr 30 minutes straight thru......pure rock

I don't think master volumes have hurt their recordings in the last few years, I suspect modern recording and mastering have. Everything is pushed to the absolute so there is nowhere for the sound to go except into fat squished compressed fizzy tone that is really loud. Play the newer stuff back to back with the old stuff and listen to the volume jump.
The secret to the AC DC tone is.... VOLUME and backing off the gain for the rythm. Even lead wise Angus plays with a lot less gain than most do now so he has to work for a lot of the notes. That's what makes it so dynamic and why it cuts through so well. ...in my opinion of course.
