BLA modded Digi 002 here. Converters, Pres, Analog stages and Clock were upgraded.

Yea, like he's gonna ship his digi back & forth from Saudi Arabia. :D

What converter or interface are you Pacifica into or are you straight into a mixing board? I recall you said you were using Nuendo.

Steve

My current setup is mic->shure pad->pacifica->a-designs atty->rme adi-8ds

I really wouldn't suggest spending that kind of money on preamps & converters for a budget setup. Like I've mentioned above, your monitoring is way much more important than preams & converters, as long as you can attenuate the input to a reasonable level to go into your interface, which the -25db should do. If not, chain another one.

As for the DAW, it's all the same shit. If you wanna spend the crazy money for a Nuendo 4, it's a good soft, gives a shitload of possibilities for routing, which you most likely won't use as of now or anytime soon, but at some point. I haven't seen the new cubase, but it should give you all these features without video for a lot less $$$.

I'm not telling him to do it, he just asked what everyone's using. If he became interested in this particular setup he could always buy an already modified unit used on gearslutz.

I'm running a pro tools jr from a digidesign 002 rack into a mac pro, have a lot of popular mics, a tascam DM24 digital board that I run optical into the 002. I am not fond of the 002, the converters are not that good. I dont like pro tools jr either, logic will be coming soon, its a much better system IMO. Have a universal audio LA610 mic pre which I dearly love, as well as some presonus and peavey stuff. I am running all universal audio plug ins, which have been fantastic and I highly recommend but because of PT jr's plug in platform, I can only use them in mixdown stages, never tracking. Its not that big a deal since I never add stuff when tracking anyway. I want an empirical labs distresser and some API pre's in the future

I did it really early on, so it was about $450 for the works. It improved the unit drastically. I still don't use the pres though. They're obviously more crisp, 3D like, with a tighter more defined bottom and nice highs, but it still didn't blow me away. You can tell the analog stages were much improved, and it helps when I run my better pres through them.

They do nice work. It's too bad Digi doesn't step up to the plate and improve their units to the quality BLA mods them.

Gone from amp mods to recording gear mods! When will the madness stop? Thanks for the info....

Thanks.....I want simple, but good. I would rather spend a few grand and have something good than a few hundred and have shit. Your recordings though are always the best on here. I do check out your site when you make the gear tests. Extremely well done!

Various mics...Sm57, Beta 57, MD421, Audix I5 and Heil PR30---Tascam DM3200 digital mixer/ control surface w Firewire card---Macbook Pro running Logic 8---Mackie HR824 monitors. Finally getting dialed in and sounding great. Probably get a nice vintage mic pre at some point.

I'm sorry, man, I really shouldn't post when I'm that tired. I came off like a total ass, that wasn't my intention.

Well, thanks..... I guess. Truth to be told, my recordings suck donkey ass due to my space limitations, I have to compress & eq the hell out of many things to somehow "fix" that & that eq/compression makes it sound like a pile of garbage. I'd take a good live room & a monitoring room with one of those $300 interfaces & a great set of monitors over a pile of hi-end recording equipment in shitty circumstances & this comes from a guy who hates digi pres & converters. Great studios aren't great studios because of their gear, but because of their rooms. Today's internet gear marketing makes people believe that if they buy that $4000 microphone, it will make their recordings sound like that of Teldex or Cello studios. Bunch of horseshit! Don't get sucked into this tide of consumers. Well, the rant's over & I'm sorry it came up.

1. How many rooms do you have?
2. Do they sound like poo?

gtr split between loaded down heads split into Axe-fx and Digi eleven R for DI/re-amp path.
Motu 896 MK3 and Traveler, ancient Telefunken mic pres ripped out of a board into a windows machine running Sequoia, and a Mac running Logic.
Occasionally will use Nuendo or ProTools.

I run a signature modded black lion 002 its killer, but why not trade in your 003 rack towards a protools hd system, i can give you a killer price , let me know!
