Who are you guys to tell someone else what to do with their lives?

If I or anybody else got in here and told you all to fuck off and stop buying so much gear most of which you only use in your living room or in a shitty 100 ppl bar I'm sure you'd all get really mad and tell me/him to shut the f up right? that's because no one is entitled to tell anyone what to do with their lives.

Metallica is such a great band that today, 25+ years later, prob. three generations later are the biggest heavy band. Metallica costs 1.6 mill to book (fact from the metclub boards) and they have a world tour SOLD OUT. Man, that's something, and for those of you that think the money/croud size ain't nothing, well they seem to REALLY be enjoying themselves out there, so what more could you ask as a musician.

I REALLY think ppl just don't get what music is all about sometimes....music is not about being able to play 2000 notes at 200bpm, it's not about NAILING your past material 100% all the time, it's about ENJOYING the moment, and 25+ years later, thousands of shows later, you can do to a Metallica concert and honestly say the energy level was as high or higher as new band full of 20 year olds....

Jesus man....

Someone's butthurt

dude, it's not about being hurt or even if you like the music of not, it's about the fucking musicians decease. We think things should done the way we want it to. We're entitled to tell people how to live, and how to play, what to play, what instrument to play. It's honestly bullshit.

I fucking can't stand cookie monster vocals, or death metal, but if the people playing/creating it are happy and enjoying it who am I to tell them to quit playing/composing such stupid tasteless shit? no one right?

Metallica plays a good show at a high level year after year. Why the fuck should they retire?

I am starting this thread as a fanboy or former fanboy as some may view me because of this thread and my intention is not to be a troll.

I have followed Metallica since I was a kid living in the San Francisco Bay Area and when I was old enough went to my first Metallica show in 1991 at the Cow Palace. I had seen them at almost every show since then including the first ever TruckLOAD free show in San Jose, 1997 Bridge School benefit and the SF symphony show at Berkley community theater in April of 99. I even recorded the Bammies on a cassette tape off the radio when Kirk played with Carlos Santana on stage in 92 since I could not get my parents to let me go to the award show.

I was a huge fan of Reload and Load albums. Not only was the music evolving in the 90s but I felt the lyrics were very well written and actual tapped into emotions we all could relate to on a universal level and that is why Metallica was so huge as a metal band even in the mainstream market.

Fast forward to today. This was not a good decade at all for Metallica. They have become a bad cliché or caricature of themselves. I really think it is time for them to hang it up in order to be viewed as respectable and credible in a historic context.

I think Hetfield would do well as a solo act doing more rock, country western, bluesy stuff. He simply outgrew Metal just like many of the Punk rockers from the late 70s or early 80s outgrew punk. Its how people evolve nothing wrong with that.

The lyrics no longer really mean anything and the riffs just sound like cutout fills from the Justice For All recording sessions. Kirk no longer really tries it seems to even play solos correctly anymore live on stage. A future in Satriani style solo albums and instructional videos would be a good way for him to go after Metallica.

Trujillo I thought was pretty cool back in the Ozzy, Suicidal Days but with Metallica his stage antics just seem to take it down to a Gene Simmons type of maturity level. Where the only one who thinks he looks cool anymore is himself.

As for Lars he was really pushing the edge of thrash drumming in the late 80s and something happened in the mid 90s that made him decide to downsize his kit and then add the Napster fiasco and what we have now is a super ego centric rock star that not even Jacko himself can relate to.

This is why I come to the current conclusion that the best career move for Metallica would be to retire now before they totally become a traveling circus or some sort of freak show that comes to town but everyone still wants to come and see kind of like a car accident.

Thanks for reading my rant.

If the majority of us answer "yes", will you call Jaymz and tell him we think they should retire?

I wish we could hear them with a lead guitar player that CAN ACTUALLY PLAY. The songs on Death Magnetic are actaully pretty decent but the guitar solos are downright pathetic.

I like alot of the tunes on Death magnet. Was actually surprised when I first heard it.
Great riffage going on there on alot of songs.

well, i really just ask they play their songs better than any local highschool band can, and maybe not release less than demo quality recordings without any good songs. thats what happens though when you are really NOT enjoying yourselves and need a shrink just to be in the same room together. somehow though they still convince 1.6 mill worth of people a night to support that shit which i just dont get

They will ride the money train for all its worth. Look at the Stones. When you are in your 60's, can make millions, travel in style and get all the 20 year old girls viagra can let you handle, why not? Tour for a year, make millions, and take a few years off to enjoy the fruits of your labor. Repeat. I'm sure it gets old, but the money and the girls, and the addiction of fame? Priceless.

What's not to love? As long as they keep selling out shows, why stop? I can get in a rut in my day job, but it pays for my lifestyle. Now, if I had tens of millions in the bank/investment account, I may retire to do some other things, or take a temporary or "permanent" break (marketing experts would advise me on the best way to state this to milk the fans for more dough!). So, imagine Metallica calling it quits, then in 5 years, a reunion tour! They'd make a killing! I can hear it now. "Well, we took Metallica as far as we could. But after some time off, James and I were talking about old times, and one day I (Lars) said, let's do one farewell tour for our fans, its all for our fans..." crapola (when it will be $100+ per seat - all for the fans! Metallica is a business, and businesses typically don't just stop when they are making money. How many times has Kiss quit and come back? All the fan bois run to spend $$$ on the last tour, then they'll be back at it for the reunion tour(s). Its a f'n racket. Like the plot to Hollywood movies that get repeated over and over for each new generation, but its a formula that works, and makes beaucoup bucks!

Remember its no longer Metallica the metal band, its Metallica Inc. The lawsuit with Napster should have told you this years ago. Fan bois need to stop treating Metallica as the band that created music up to IJFA (IMO) or pick your album. Its Metallica Inc.

I really have been a ling time fan of Metallica. Since about 1983. Freaking loved those guys and the music. Metal up your ass!
BUT.........
After watching the Movie.."Some kinda Monster..."
and seeing how much they act like Primadonnas and Prisses......"No one can play music after 4pm since I wont be here.." Jaymz....
UM....ok?
I pretty much lost it for them.
Still dig the older stuff though.

I think any fan who wants a band to be like they were 20 years ago should retire from listening to music.

In a lot ways they are the same. Kirk sucked 20 years ago and he still sucks today.

I agree with this. I just saw em in January. They kicked ass. Funny thing was Hammet played the new solo's perfectly but some of the old songs were a bit sloppy like One. Years ago he always nailed that solo. Some older exceptions were Hit the Lights and MOP which smoked.
But the whole band was into the Death Magnetic stuff, which makes sense being it's what they've been working on. This ain't the Stones playin Satisfaction. Anyway, what band nails everything. I've never seen one that did and never cared.

I think they should continue on and do what they do.
Just bought the Metallica Guitar hero game for my kids and its great seeing them "discover"
Metallica as if it was a new thing. More power to them.
Metal up your ass!

They are kicking ass, unlike many others.

They need to stay together, and keep making good music.

and yes, Jason needs to come back, Rob sorry man, this is not for you.

I dont think they should retire, believe that after almost 30 years of doing this it is difficult to come up with new material without repeating yourself and trying to keep everyone happy. I didnt like the new album so much, James kept saying it is like puppets, well not really. It sounds like out takes of load, reload and some kinda monster and edited together and the pieces dont really fit. The guys have great live shows and this tour is no execption. I only hope they can make a better album the next time around.

peace
Rick
