Honestly should Metallica give it up and retire?

I'm just gonna throw this in: The dudes in Metallica are only about 5 or 6 years older then the dudes in Sevendust (I know, different music, whatever) and they still put on one hell of a show after touring almost non-stop since 97.

Very true. Papa Hetfield has outstanding presence.

Hey, at least Dave can still play, and brings in new lead guitarists that are incredible.
Yep. Dave knows he's a rhythm guitarist, not a lead guitarist. He brought up a LOT of talented guys too.

I wish we could hear them with a lead guitar player that CAN ACTUALLY PLAY. The songs on Death Magnetic are actaully pretty decent but the guitar solos are downright pathetic.
...Dave Mustaine...

Here we go again.

Mave is one hell of a sterile and cold sounding sloppy solo player with no vibrato at all. I love the old catalogue work he has done with Megadeth but...

Because Hammett's problems don't stem from being sloppy or having a terrible vibrato at all.

What I meant was that the situation wouldn't get better playing wise.

Metallica should have retired years ago. The only possible way that Metallica can salvage themselves as decent metal band of today would be to do the following:

1. Kick Lars out immediately and replace him with any outstanding metal drummer (George Kollias would be nice)
2. Hetfield does not sing ever again. Seriously does he think his vocals are decent for modern metal? Replace Hetfield on vocal duties with Jeffrey Walker from Carcass. He can also play bass so let go of Rob while we are at it.
3. Hire just about any current current technical metal guitarist (possibly Dylan Ruskin of Braindrill as well as Michael Keene from the Faceless) have them teach James Hetfield how to write a decent technical modern metal song. They will also be touring and playing alongside James.
4. Kirk has his wahs thrown away permanently and is demoted to 4th rhythm guitarist after he takes lessons from just about any technical metal guitarist.

Metallica is laid to waste by nearly every mainstream death metal band as far as skill and song writing goes on every instrument. They have simply not kept up with the times of metal. This is the biggest problem that faces Metallica's continual relevancy in music. Otherwise they will just be remembered for their "good ole days" instead of making better and heavier music.

This is all IMO. The band needs a complete overhaul if they wish to become better musically.

Most metallica fans want them to release another Master of Puppets, not a death metal type album.

For fans of classic metal like myself, I don't want to see them sound like a death metal or black metal band. I think you want Metallica to be something they are not.

I think they suck now too but wtf? If anything they should stop trying to "be metal" since they clearly don't live it or believe it anymore.

Nobody gives a fuck about Metallica being some kind of terrible tech metal band, least of all them. Nobody listens to Metallica to comment on how AWESOME AND BRUTAL they are. I would much rather have Hetfield '09 sing than any death metal singer going.

They will be relevant long after all the death metal bands of the world are done.

I really hope this post is a troll. I don't know if I've ever read anything quite as retarded.

Wow, I seem to be the odd man out.. I'm digging their new stuff as much as I did Puppets and Justice back in the day. Their stage show is starting to show the beating Het has put on his vocal chords, but otherwise I think they're pretty much right where they've always been. Death Magnetic ranks among their best in my books (if the mix was better even more so). I really do wish they'd get over the whole detuning thing live, that sound is starting to get annoying to my ears.. it always makes me think the guitars are out of tune.

As they've gotten older I've appreciated them more as musicians and find their recordings inspire my own playing a bit more.. I really dig some of the odd chord voicings and harmonies on the latest stuff. That, and I'm just a sucker for double kick drums..

Wow, makes me feel old to say that I thought Metallica was done as a meaningful band in 1991....right around the time that the OP seemed to first get into this band. Says a lot about the history of Metallica and the range/reach of their music to their fans, huh?

That said, whether or not I think they should retire is irrelevant....I retired them from my stereo a looooooong time ago.

big plus 1 to that. why the fuck would a band that were one of the THRASH four become death metal?

No. - simple answer.

Reason - there are still ALOT of fans, enough so that they are still touring the world and selling out arenas everywhere. doesn't matter if YOU like what they are doing now or not, there is an audience for it.

personally, I have 14gb of just Metallica on my computer (I've got every show they've recorded from 83-87), BUT, for the most part the only stuff that really gets any play time, are the first 3 cds and Garage Days, beyond that I could care less, but thats just my opinion, I know alot of guys love all their stuff and thats cool, I listen to alot of stuff that most of you probably wouldn't like as well.
