Not sure if it's just a stubborn thing, but I can't recall a single time in my life where I didn't research or experience a product firsthand and instead had a salesperson talk me into buying something. It would be cool if a gear advisor that I've ever spoken to knew what they were talking about, but 99% of the time it's "I will look into that" but for the most part it seems that it's me asking a question I already know the answer to and them responding with incorrect information just to try and sell me something. 
Seems like a few of you have had knowledgeable reps or whatever, but hasn't been my experience. I'm not limiting that to music gear, either. Pretty much everything.
