I'm in process of buying a Fender American Fat Strat that I want to Convert to a Single Pickup, Single Knob,Rock/ Punk Rock/Metal Machine. What Pick up would you recommend for a single Hum?

I'm Looking for something that has a Fat Thick Low end to Balance out The Strat having less low end than say the Les Pauls I have. I also want the Pickup to be WARM and not have the Harsh Sizzly High end that say an EMG 81 Has. That harsh sizzle or fizz on the Low notes when using an 81 has started to drive me crazy. The older 81's didn't seem to have as much Fizz as the newer Quick Connect Versions.

Well with what you are describing, the Tone Zone fits the bill. I don't like that pickup but the fat and thick low end is there. I yanked one from a So Cal years ago in favor of a JB.

I have been researching pickups recently as well for a LP. When watching pickup comparison vids, I noticed that the SD Custom had a noticeably thicker low end than the JB. Think it was the Custom. Might have been the Custom Custom. I would check out some comparison vids as well to get a feel for where a possible option for you sits next to a pickup that you are already familiar with.

The Custom has more low end than the JB But it's a different type of low end. It's tighter than the JB & seems more immediate. So far I've considered an EMG 85 (only cause I have an unopened one on hand) I've also considered a Suhr Aldrich or some of the MCP Stuff. I've even considered BKP as well.

The Aldrich has been on my radar for a few years also.

The low end difference between the JB and Custom sounds just like you described to me. Tighter, more modern, kind of hifi sounding on the Custom.

Ah shit, you said Single Pickup and read 'Single Coil' so I didn't bother initially

+1 on the Custom Custom (TB11)
JB will be too bright
Invader even moreso
Super Distortion was decent

As others have mentioned, Custom or Tone Zone will work. But if you want serious low end the MCP Afwayu will devastate the competition.

My Concern was the Neck/Fretboard are Maple. I'm planning on keeping this guitar tuned to E standard Maybe EFlat, D Standard would be the absolute lowest i'm going to go with it.

Got two LP standards one with Aldrich and one with Sheptone tribute like both but the sheptone is hard to beat.

The regular ceramic Custom has low-end, alright, but also lots of highs. It's a very broad-sounding pickup.

Tone Zone or Duncan custom ceramic(SH-5)
Then there is also the duncan Invader which has a lot of low end

YMMV but I thought the Invader in my strat was a treble'y shrill mess with very little articulation.

But yeah - Custom, Custom Custom, Alt 8, should all work as well as this new Custom/Hybrid I keep hearing about.

I'm literally taking notes on what you guys suggest.

Who makes a Great Pickguard? cause i'm going to need that too.

I get HSS ones at Guitar Center but if you want something special you can try guitarfetish dot com

I believe they also offer prewired pic guards with pups already in them - but I don't know anything about the specifics.

While you are at, go to the Seymour Duncan web site 'pickup selector' tool. It is kind of fun and you may get some cool rec's off that too. Good luck.

I've been listening to Pick up Demos all day. I'm glad i have a Job that will allow me to do that.

I really like this video and is a main reason I keep my TB11. Granted, I've since removed it from my Strat and put it in my Schecter C+ but that just means that I play the Schecter a lot more so it was worth the swap. The Strat now has a Super Distortion but would not hesitate to get another TB11 Custom Custom.

Cleans start around 1:40

I'd strongly consider the Dimarzio Super Distortion. The JB can do that well in the right guitar as well.

Dimarzio Super Distortion, Time Zone, I think anything that is high output with the treble rolled off on its specs will do the trick pretty good. I love the BKP Warpig, I think it’s almost exactly fits the bill, except the damn price.

The Warpig is one that i'm looking at. So far these are the ones I've been listening to clips of lately.

1. Duncan Custom Line

2. MCP Afwayu & Solution

3. SD JB

4. SD ALT8 - This is one is very interesting to me.

5. BKP Warpig & Ragnarock

6. EMG 85 - only cause I have one brand new in the box on my nightstand.
