Deeper the Love solo flat out kills even though I was killed by the Sykes crew over my love for that one   One of the sexiest solos I have ever heard.

I think Bob said he was making fish clocks in mass quanities for puplic use.

"I never lost anything to that Ralph Macchio!!! MACCHIO,..... MACCHIO,..... MACCHIOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!"

I am not a huge fan of Vai but you cannot deny the guy is just a monster on guitar.. He is one of those guys who looks like he was born with it attached to his body. He can pull of some crazy things that not many can do.
And you just gotta love him in the movie "Crossroads"!! Jack Butler was a badass!

Alternate ending that did not make it to the movie!!!

I thought Vai did an excellent job of giving White Snake a new sound. Not that the John Sykes "blues based" White Snake is bad mind you, but Vai added something more "polished" maybe.

"Sailing Ships" and "Wings of the Storm" are awesome.

As great a player as Vai is, I prefer his playing on other people's stuff. The first 2 DLR albums, and then the one with Whitesnake are my favorite work he's done. I think Passion and Warfare is his strongest album, but I'd rather listen to the other's mentioned.

I know this thread is more about his earlier days,but....No doubt, Vai is a master of his instrument. Although, anymore, I really think he is more than a guitarist. I see him more as a composer that can play his ass off. He writes the entire piece music with so many layers and instruments. It's not just always a rock backdrop with shredding on top. You might not like all his stuff, but if you really dig into it an listen to his stuff as an entire composition, there is alot more there than just guitar work.

i'm one that has always gone on about hair in the wind, humping guitars, general cheese, etc... but vai is definitely a badass player. he's incredible. i am completely humbled by his ability.

Yeah, Vai stepped in for Yngwie AND EVH. I dont know of mant guys back then that could have pulled off.
+1 Vai is my favorate all around guitar player!!

Disturbing The Peace was my fave album when it came out, and the first DLR with Vai was sooooo...the shit, still love Flexable...but was no fan of his subsequent solo releases with the exception of Sex And Religion because of DT.
Seeing Vai on the first ZPZ tour doing the Black page with Bozzio reminded me why I initially loved his playing and it I'm digging him again since then.

As for GG and Waves, that to me has more of a Carl Verheyen flavour, but as I told Guthrie much of Erotic Cakes sounds like what I'd imagine Vai would sound if he'd practiced 20 instead of 14 hours a day. :-)

Vai was my hero in Highschool..

I remember when VH released 5150 ...the utter shock and horror , stunned every VH fan in my neighborhood!!!

We all waited too see what Diamond Dave had up his sleeve and Eat Em and Smile delivered on all fronts..

fantastic album, and a killer band...unfortunately DLR decided to change direction for Skyscraper and ruined a good thing...

It was actually the crossroads duel that made Vai a favorite of mine!

The Alcatrazz disc is amazing too..I like Vai much better when he doesn't have thousands of layered guitars on every track...

Vai solo in 'Big Trouble' off 'Eat em'?? :2thumbsup: :rawk:

still one of my faves off one of my regularly played discs....
He shoulda played THAT in Crossroads an kikd the kids azz...

Bob - what are you going to be building in the woodshop? Sounds interesting - share!

I have a billion ideas, but plan on starting off slowly with a few. First, I've ordered a CNC router (Camaster Cobra X3 - 4'x8'), and have a boatload of other power, hand and clamping tools on order as well as a good amount of tools I've gathered over the years.

The initial plan is focusing on sign making (business, etc.) and guitar speaker and head cabs. I'm not planning on getting into the "I can do it for a penny cheaper" market, so I'll probably do very few vinyl covered cabs. My real interest is exotic hardwood cabs. The CNC can do 3D cutting, which is what I've been playing with mostly in the CAD/CAM application I bought, so I've got some fun ideas. Obviously, there's not a big market for this, but that's O.K. There are some local breweries I'm interested in pitching some products for too, but we'll see. Again, lots of ideas... this is starting out as just an expensive hobby. We'll see where it goes.

Oh, and I'm also planning on doing a lot of cabinetry and misc woodwork for the house. This 1967 kitchen is ready for the junk pile... lots of opportunities around the house.

Very cool you are doing this Bob, I have read many articules about how people have chased their passions after getting laid off from their jobs and have done fairly well for themselves.

Kitchens are the biggest money pits in home ownership and if you can redo yours on your own my hat is off to you, I will NEVER redo another kitchen as long as I live unless I come into free large amounts of cash. They are like cars, you get your basic car and then you even have to pay for the stinking floormats and now the car is 33% more than the original price.

Bob, you are going to get me all excited.

Weird that I sent for more info on the X3 system over the weekend.

Exactly! The way I see it, if I can deck my house out with choice cabs, moulding, etc., I've acheived my ROI and everything else is just gravy. I've got some paisley tolex scraps here that I'm thinking would look really nice on a new cabinet for my JMP. :)

Very cool! Talk with Joey at Camaster. He's a great guy and will answer boatloads of questions, as he's very technical.

What are you planning for the CNC?

Just guitar building really. I don't think I will have the budget for anything larger/more powerful. I think the X3 is going to be more than I need, but I like what I have read about them.

Cool, you'll be able to get away with a smaller table for only guitars. Tell Joey what you're planning and they'll customize a machine to fit your needs.
