I wonder if he is still using this rig?

This song starts out so slow but this song is anthem rock at it's best.

I tried.
I tried hard.

Haha yea I was the same at the start especially the death growl vocals. Each to their own

Ghost reveries is one of the best metal albums ever recorded. I know some people prefer Blackwater Park but I got into GR first and it's just got more of everything that made Opeth great in their prime. Damnation is great too. Shows the other side of the band.

Great band. I appreciate all of their records for various things about them. Check out Soen as well, another cool band.

I was a huge Opeth fan, loved them. Total fanboy. I'll just say their last few releases have been disappointing at best. Some good tunes here and there, but I was hoping the pretentious jazz/fusion/whatever would be temporary.

Loved them until Deliverance, got to see them live during Deliverence era too.
I slowly drifted away from them after Ghost Reveries tough.
Makes me think I must have prefered them with Peter more than Fredrik.

Big fan here too. Ghost Reveries and Blackwater Park are my favorites. I really like Pale Communion too.

To me Opeth is a better dream theater.

Darker and more complex song arrangements with the added death growl. Every song is like being taken on a journey. Ghost Reveries and Blackwater Park are their most popular albums and are no doubt awesome. My favorite albums are still life and my arms your hearse. Some epic stuff, they remain consistent to this day and are amazing live.

Love Opeth, just saw them live again a month or two ago. They're both using Marshall JVM410HJS amps with various effects in a rack. Similar but different to the videos you posted above.

I can't listen to them now but was totally in to them from around 1996 until about 2002. Everything since to me has been meh...but STILL LIFE for me is their masterpiece....absolutely love that album

I thought Mikael was using Vintage Moderns??

Back in the earlier days, both were Laney. Peter VH100R, and Mikael GH100L. But, both used Boss GT floor units..

At any rate, I too am a big fan. Really, their entire catalog has it's share of peaks and valleys, but I love Blackwater Park and Deliverence for their styles, Ghost Reveries is also killer as they shifted directions somewhat. Damnation is what it is, mostly if not all acoustic, showing another side to them that most dont know.

I didn't care much for Heritage, but Pale Communion and Sorceress are also in a different style from the norm. They are what they are, and excellent showcasing of the talents that they are. The drummer has won best "prog drummer" last two years in a row, for good reason.

Get Lamentations DVD, as well as Live at the Royal Albert. The Royal Albert really goes back, but, again, the talent of these guys is off the charts. Simply amazing musicians, and both Fredrik and Mikael are pretty sick lead players. Mikael has that beautiful vibrato in his playing, and I love his phrasing. Just a fluent, well-rounded lead player. Case in point, Mikaels lead here..

Fredrik

At one point he was using the Fractal Axe FX into the Marshall Vintage Modern, but the recent rundown I saw had them both using JVM410HJS amps with a Fractal for crazier delays (Carbon Copy for standard delay) and a rack tray of various pedals.

I don't know if it's just a matter of me having the wrong expectations, but I don't get Opeth at all. I thought they were supposed to be a metal band, but every song I've heard has a boring intro that would put me to sleep if it wasn't for the vocals kicking in and forcing me to immediately turn it off. Maybe I'm just listening to the wrong songs or albums, but they're unlistenable to me - like a less-catchy version of Ghost or something.

I get where you're coming from.
I absolutely LOVE OPETH myself. However, I only have two friends that like them. Alot of my metal friends just don't seem to jive with them. I think they're one of those bands that you either REALLY connect with, or not at all.

One of the biggest differences I see with Opeth compared to so many other metal bands is that they simply aren't thrashy. I love me some chugs just as much as the next metal head, but you won't really find that style in Opeth. Instead, they are much more progressive and epic, focusing on the atmosphere just as much as the notes they play.

The first Opeth song I ever heard was The Drapery Falls from Blackwater Park, and honestly it was the immensity of Mikael's clean vocals on the first couple verses that sucked me in. It is so melodic and aggressive at the same time. Then I discovered Ghost Reveries and it was all over. For me, Opeth has always put out music that demands some serious effort up front to understand. I realize it's cliche to say that their music takes repeated listens to unfold, but to me this is absolutely the case.

Haha, that is actually a pretty good analysis, I like it. For the newer jazzy/prog/pretentious stuff anyway.
