I had forgotten how much I like the Ampeg VH140-C

Not the most flexible amp in the world (forget mid gain IMHO), but the clean and high gain tones in tehis thing are incredible.

Interestingly, I find myself scooping the mids on this amp mopre than I normally do...I tend to like a slight scooped metal tone.

Sounds and feels killer through my G Flex with well broken in speakers. FWIW, I have found that I REALLY don't liek G Flexes until the speakers are broken in, but once they are...sweeeeeet. :thumbsup:
 
I love mine. I find that keeping most of the knobs around noon and the gain under control at about 9:30-10:00....and then hit it with a boost pedal provides an ungodly evil death metal tone. The gain on this amp is, in a word, ridiculous.

Like you, I also find that scooping the mids out completely, setting the bass, treble and gain at 5:00 (maxed out) is fun. Kinda reminds me of old Exhorder tones (espeically 'The Law.')

The cleans are surprisingly good too....have you tried boosting the clean channel and messing with the gain levels while doing so? There are some mid-gain tones to be had there. It's not the best amp for it...but with a little work, there's something usable.

I just bought a PSA1 from a fellow Rig-Talk'r that will hopefully arrive soon that I am going to mess around with. Since they recommed using a solid state power amp with the PSA1, I'm curious as to what I'll get out of it.
 
When I had mine I thought it sounded best with the mids around 9 o'clock. Pretty sweet amp for sure.
 
I have an Ampeg VL-502 head from the same time period, how would you say they compare?
(and before anyone pipes in, I know were talking SS vs. Tubes ;) )
 
I understand the VH140-c is the same head as a Crate GT3500. Is that the case? I also read somewhere one of them has heat issues, but I can't remember which.
 
i wish i had one. i need one for a side project or two...how much these things go for these days?
