I Love this Video: Kyle Bull's 20 Amps, Same Cab

It's from a couple years ago, but I absolutely love this video. 20 high-gain amps through the same cab, same riff. First half is close mic'd, second half is room audio (which I prefer). I love that he did both. And I like the riff because it makes it easy to really hear each amp's character. For us gear nerds, there are certainly innate differences between each amp. But at the end of the day, those differences are fairly subtle. Granted, if I close my eyes and listen I can pick out a handful I like slightly more than the others. But they all seem to get the job done. Well... maybe except the XXX lol ;)

The room mic was a good idea. Assuming he matched levels going into the mic I don't know how you really choose to eq the amps to make it 'fair' but this is a good example. I'd like to see this but in a band context with a few different songs to see how well they translate.

If they are level matched I'd think the eq would play a role for the room mic tests once you start getting into equal loudness curves and such. Still good shootout

I've mostly enjoyed his channel over the years. I can tell he doesn't like video editing much (which I completely get myself). I would make a lot more videos if editing wasn't so time consuming.

I wish I could learn how to mic my speakers because it always sounds like shit when I try to record. I use an SM57 and sometimes an SM7B with a db boolst (Dave Friedman actually told me in person that the SM7B works good for recording guitar).

I know these amps are boosted with an overdrive, but I liked the sound of the Bogners, Splawn and DSL50 the best.

That Omega amp was the coolest looking amp and my 2nd least favorite. The XXX was surprisingly kind of a stinker in this clip and I like the Xxx.

The Omega was my favorite. But I'm biased since I have one. It's gotta be in the top 3 amps I've ever played. Looking at his settings, I can see why he's not getting the best sound out of it though. He's running it in the crunch/low gain mode, with the Level higher than Master. It sounds much better when the Master is set higher than Level. The XXX was the worst of the bunch for me and I also hate that amp in general.

Omega sounds horrible here and also in the video where he runs a 5150 through it so it can't just be the settings though perhaps the power section just doesn't work well with the 5150 preamp.

Oh I didn't even catch the fact that he was boosting these.

Which ones did you like in the video? I'm ignoring the close-mic'd portion of the video, though. The room audio gives me a better idea of what the amps sound like IMO.

At the Level and Master settings he's running, the amp is only about as loud as a TV during a Super Bowl party. There's no way the amp is even beginning to breathe. It's barely on. Put the master at noon and dial the presence and mids down a bit. It will sound like the most incredible chunky, chainsaw grind you've ever heard. I boosted mine and cranked it to ear-bleed levels yesterday and I haven't heard anything like that in person before.

I would have preferred him not use any boosts, but I understand that some of these amps sound better with one. And some of these amps you would never need a boost. But I get it -- he wanted to be consistent.

The DV-77 is a bit polarizing too. People either love it or hate it. I imagine that could be throwing off some of those amps for people. Its pretty dark and sounds like it has a low pass on it.

They sound great to me. I have a quad of them waiting to go into... something. Not sure what yet.

Didnt listen to it, but your description reminds me of Lugo's old amp shootout. Amazing how slight the difference in sound is between amps, all else being equal.

100% agree. The Granophyre is a whole different amp with the Master high and then use the Level for overall volume. Such a sick amp that I have foolishly sold twice now.
