I miss this Paul Gilbert

There's a big difference between playing the blues & playing the Blues scale. Paul has yet to graduate authentically to the former.

Because he hasn't visited the crossroads??

Because he didn't grow up on the blues, played the blues when he was young, spent the majority of his time on shredding etc & now that is ingrained into his DNA so when he tries to play the Blues now, it sounds like a he's playing the Blues scale & not authentic.

Paul is a shredder & that's what he excels in imo. he may want to be a tasty blues guy now, but it's not going to happen.

From that video I don't think he was even using "the blues scale" much. And you have to for up on the blues to play the blues?? Really?? So is the same for every genre?? Or just the blues??

What??? Who says he has to feel pain to play the blues. Paul isn't a good blues player. period.

He doesn't have the feel or phrasing to play it authentically. he may love to play the blues & he may think he's now a bluesman, but when he plays the blues, he sounds like he's playing the blues scale.

He's a shredder & he's spent way too much time playing that style & it affects everything else he plays. It's just fact.

I love Paul. I have everything he's ever put out, but he's not a good blues player.

Sure, the guy is a guitar legend but I have to LOL at his "assessment" of what metal is at 1:37 - 1:43. Here Paul, check out some metal with unusual chord progressions and solos full of bendy, non-scalar based melodic note choices. Welcome to 1990 !

He's soloing using the blues scale & playing stock blues licks, but his feel & phrasing are so based in shred that it sounds stiff & unauthentic.

I saw that one. I don't really think that was him trying to play the blues. Seems like someone just tagged the video that. Couldn't really find any other examples. And if that's all you have to base your opinion on this not much.

I've seen him live as well & that's what he sounds like playing the blues.

The reason you've never heard him play blues authentically is because he can't & that's why there are no clips of him playing blues out there.

Playing bluesy, yes. Playing the blues scale, yes. Playing the blues authentically, unfortunately no.

Paul is amazing. I love his playing & love Racer X, but a bluesman, he ain't.

I'd be extremely surprised if he couldn't play authentic blues if he actually wanted to. Live his fans want to see him shred. To say he can't because he doesn't do it live is silly IMO.

Who cares if he doesn't sound like an authentic blues man or not.. I think the point he was trying to make is that he has diversified his sound and approach by using blues concepts and phrasing because he feels it is more expressive. To that, I would 100% agree. He has the best of both worlds going on here. He isn't sloppy enough to play down and dirty blues. He is a picking machine and everything sounds bang on all the time. This new approach I dig. More bending and dynamics. Makes the arpeggios sound even cooler when finally they decide to make an appearance and melt your face. Anyway, I don't "miss" the old Paul Gilbert because essentially he is still there.
