My band has begun doing fly dates and other gigs where I can't bring an amp. I would love to grab an Axe FX, but my budget won't allow it. So...

I need the best distortion pedal in the world. I would prefer something more modern sounding, but the main thing is quality of tone going into whatever clean amp is provided.

Atomic Overdrive?
Megalith Delta?

Please give me your recommendation based on first person experience. Feel free to argue! :D

Thanks!

Depends on what you want?

If you need good quality sounding gain from a pedal, check out the following:

Weehbo plexdrive/jcm drive/ or hell drive
carl martin plexitone
Wampler Triple Wreck
Okko Dominator

Don't overestimate the amount of gain you need. Too many times I see people thinking they need a Diezel Herbert to cop the tones of a band that just use a tubescreamer in front of an orange or a jcm800. The Weehbo's or the Carl martin can get you plenty of useable gain unless your wanting ridiculous trendy djent levels of gain-- in which case the megalith, the wampler, or the okko would probably suit you well.

those plexitones are hard to beat in a pinch.

a sansamp gt-2 can get you by too..you'd be surprised.

also, the less you have, the less you have to fuck with.

+1

Cover your basic sounds and KISS (keep it simple stupid)

Distortus Maximus.
I've used it for fly-ins. It's like having a preamp in a pedal. Built like a tank, tons of headroom, responsive EQ, modern tone, lots of gain.

I would like out the Wampler pedals, like the SLOstortion or TriWreck.

I have a barber Dirty Bomb that works great too, only issue with it, is you may have to adjust the sub-bass pot inside the pedal, depending on the amp you end up using.

Another thought, is to just go direct and check out the Tech21 character pedals, like the California, US Metal, or British.

Thanks very much dudes! I appreciate the insight.

I need tones in the Mesa Rec vein. I'll check out everything listed by you guys.

I have a Dirty Bomb that has kept me from buying anything else, but you can't front on slamming an amp with a ProCo Rat.

Another vote for the Riot here... the other guitar player in my band was using an OCD in front of his fender blues deville. Then, I let him use my Suhr Riot, and it is a night and day difference. Just a heap more saturation, and there are voicing mode options. Super cool dirt box.

I must lay hands on one of these Riot animals. The Triple Wreck is awesome but it is a chugging recto.

Play pedals. Like it, buy it. Don't like it, don't buy it. Fuck what everyone else says. No one here is you. Well.... except you maybe.

This custom painted Suhr Riot is cool. Comes with it's own carrying case......and it's cool they threw a matching guitar in

I have yet to find a pedal that I'm completely satisfied with in front of a pure clean amp. The closest I got was the London Bones and the Blackstar Dual.

If you can get a slight crunch out of the amp, I would get a ProCo Whiteface Rat Reissue. I run mine into the low input of a 2204 with the preamp maxed (still pretty clean). It honestly sounds better than many of the high gain amps I've had.....Engl's, Peavey's, JVM, VHT Pitbull, etc...

Riot and a Plexitone. If the amp does not like the plexitone you can use the Riot with the Plexitone's boost as a lead boost. Use the Riot on 12volts. Night and day difference compared to 9.

Riot is the best sounding one that I've heard. I'd buy it in your situation.
