Last I checked Avatar selled the heritage gb's for $649 a quad just for the speakers. So in that sense the VM at $750 is a real good deal. But it doesn't match.

Yeah, it's definitely a good deal. I don't think the Greenbacks in the Vintage Modern cab are the "heritage" models, though. I think those are typicall G12H30s and come in the Marshall handwired cabs, right?

Eddies Guitars here locally has a slant Marshall 1960AHW (handwired) cab with the "bass" version of the heritage G12H30s (I think those are the desirable version) for $1,200 new. Dang, that's pricey.

the speakers in the Vintage Modern cab are supposed to be English made and a better and deferent speaker than the Heritage G-12M Greenback. the speaker was supposedly designed for the Jimi Handwired Reissue amp? i can't find anywhere verifying the English made part, but all other spiel is around. seems like there was threads about the cab on here a few months back? pm George or Ralph? kindda hard to tell the damned things purple, really looks more black?

Hell, load up your Mojave and go to both places and try the cabs, then you'll know if the amp like H30's or the smaller magnet Greenbacks.

On that note, I got pissed off last night. I called Eddie's Guitars in St. Louis to talk about prices. This place is well known on the web, as they deal top of the line stuff (VHT, Soldano, Bogner, Diezel, Budda, Dr. Z, etc...) These guys have always thought their shit didn't stink when I've been there before. I bought the UberKab and a Diezel 2x12" from them. They act like you should feel honored to be there.

Well anyway, I asked them if I could bring my amp in tomorrow (which is today) to try a few cabs. They said they don't allow people to just show up to do that, so I had to set an appointment. I laughed in the jerks face. What a bunch of pricks. That turned me off to them for now. Those little snobby bitches!

I called there yesterday to see if they had any sig:x's in stock. The guy really seemed like he couldn't be bothered to tell me. Sounded very annoyed.

Fuck Eddies. Cork-sniffing fags lock their doors now. You have to ring a buzzer to get in!!!!

You have got to be shitting me. You have to ring a buzzer just to get into the store? Do they even allow people to talk in and browse at all anymore or is it all by appointment?

well shit, if St. Louis lives up to it's reputation, maybe a buzzer ain't such a bad idea?

hell, you've got thinking about that VM cab now dammit! i've got quite bit of stuff i need to spam or trade, but not coming up with too much i'd wanna trade for.

when a GC has a good manager and store runs like i guess it's meant to be, it makes it pretty hard to put up with a snoty mom&pop.

in some ways, i wonder if the snoty cork sniffer crap doesn't work on the Gear page type guys?

i'm with you thumpy-

i just LOVE the look of a beat marshall cab!

i think overall you'd dig the gh30s more than the greenies, but you could also blend them.

fwiw, vic thought my uberkab sounded nice when we a/bed it next to his mojave...mine was nice for full sounding leads, his was the brown rhythm king

my experience with those speakers is the gh is smoother and the greenback honkier...both interesting.

Chris, do You NEED a cab??? dont want to start a shitstorm, but fwiw, I have 2 4x12 slants, one thats a little cleaner version of the one you bid on, and a more recent 1960a, both loaded with the same shit celestion 70s... The older cab absolutely SMOKES the new one. even swapped speakers for a goof. It's definitely in the cabs, Bro. I'd be inclined to hold out for something with a little more history/tone if ur in no rush....imo....

Really? I mean, I do believe the cab makes a differences and it's not just all about the speakers, but I thought that for the most part, Marshall cabs have been made the same way for 30+ years? Interesting!

And no, I don't really "need" a cab. lol... I really like my two D412 cabs. Alot. But the curiousity is killing me. I need to know what this Peacemaker sounds like through a Greenback or G12H30 loaded cab.

I'm trying to talk "worldoftone" into selling me that '72 Marshall cab he posted pics of above. It's a pain in the arse to ship, though, and most people don't want to deal with that (me included.)

Yeah, no joke Bro... I mean, it's just these 2 I can tell ya about, natch, but, yeah, 4 real. Enuff difference that I'm sellin the 1960 with no regrets ( financial reasons) and I'll never part w/ the other. Like the difference between earthy, rounder, more authentic tone and sterile copy, best way I guess I can describe... both cabs in comparable shape physically, real clean. Pulled both speaker sets back an forth 'bout 8 years ago, ( yeah, I had too much time on my hands   but I HAD to freakn know...) and it smoked the newer one. TOTALLY, I mean TOTALLY different tone. by FAR. (if you like that difference, and I DO.) I goofed years back an changed the grillecloth on both of em, (like the unknowing a$$hole I was/am,  ) an the older cab STILL beat the hell outa my '60a, tone-wise. an thats with sh!# speakers. I cant WAIT to load it with greenbacks... :D I'm playin live thru an earcandy 2x12 with mc90s for the mark iv, but I'm savin this baby for a jvm, maybe a Cameron, sumthin to 'brown' things up a bit...  I hate to prove 2 b an anal ass, but yeah, my experiences, IMHO, the cab ALSO makes a significant difference..... But who the FK knows what ur gonna get used, ya know??? Not like eBay provides sound clips.....

Cool stuff! Just how old is your older Marshall cab? Are we talking early 90s, 80s, 70s???

Dunno.... Ralph says it's '73... it was his... looks just like the one u bid on... I don't know enuff about dating them to be sure... wanted them to look similar from the stage, I so regret the HELL outa changin out that Fkn grillcloth in the worst way now... but it still kicks the a$$ outa the 60a by contrast... no complaints...How the hell do u date em anyway? I got the impression you cant at a certain point....

Oh heck yeah... This was just listed and I snagged it. 1977 slant Marshall cab for a total of approximately $685 shipped to me. Original "blackback" speakers, buit one was reconed. Great shape, though!

Now you're in business. My '75 is my favorite cab I've ever had. I have the blackbacks in a mojo cab right now but I'm actually going to swap them back into the old cab.

Well, I'm no expert, but I know alot of folks date them by the codes on the speakers themselves. There are other little changes that real experts can see to come up with a small date range, but yeah, that get's over my head.

The one I bid on was "pre-1993" or whatever, but not a vintage one. It looked the part, though! The one pictured a few posts up from "worldoftone" is a '72 and I want it. :) He's checking now to see if the speakers are original and thinking about whether or not he wants to ship it. If he doesn't, heck, I may not even get another cab. The impulse thing is kinda leaving me now. lol

Or I may get a Mojave. bwaaaaaaah

Yeah, I stand corrected, dont think mine is 73, doesnt look like the 72, looks exactaly like the 77 you just nailed... Congrats, Bro!!! Let us know when she arrives!!!!!!!! :rawk:

That was a helluva score. Sometimes those speakers are selling for almost that much by themselves.  I've got a top and bottom just like it, and they sound awesome.

WOT's cab doesn't have stock speakers. It's got the metal handels, and plastic cups, so the cab is in the 72-73 range but they didn't start using blackbacks until 75-76. before that they were Greenbacks up through 73 or so, then grey or cream backs, then black backs.

Thanks man! Yeah, WOT didn't say they were stock. He was checking on it, though. I thought this was a pretty good score too! I freaked a little when I searched this morning and saw the BIN at $499. I was on there all day yesterday and all night last night just waiting for one to pop up.

That was a no brainer. I've seen those cabinets go as high as 800-1200 on ebay, If you find you don't like it as much as your VHT cabs, you can sell it and make a few bucks.
