I've always wanted a marshall or clone head. I dont need one, but I really want one! I've seen ceriatone and metro, are there any other people that make the marshall clones that are not crazy expensive?

I'm wanting a 50w head. something that can cover sounds like guns n roses, soundgarden, alice in chains etc. which model? jtm? plexi? 800? jubliee?

any help much be grateful!

I can vouch for the factory built Ceriatone amps. Very solid and great buys.

You're probably talking about a JCM800 although Soundgarden used Peavey (Thayil had a VTM), AIC mixed Marshall with Bogner.

There must be something wrong with my ears, but I swear allot of them have ghost notes, especially when they have been modded. But call me loco. :loco:

Get the ceriatone chupacabra....

The 800 doesn't have enough gain for what you ask unless you want to boost it, which I don't like doing that much...

I've heard good things about Granger building a great bang-for-the-buck "Marshall"

The vids sound really good

AFAIK, Jerry Cantrell has made most of his famous recordings using a Bogner modified Marshall, until recently when he started using Bogner designed amps. His newer rig is a mix of Uberschall and Fish preamp into some power amp I'm not sure. On the cheap I'd probably be after a Ceriatone or Bugera. Bugera may not be the most dependable or most liked amp around, but on the cheap I think they make a better clone than a lot of other Marshall clones.

o forgot to mention, if the Bugera comes with an extended warrantee that covers return shipping..... get it

Really, you could probably find a DSL in the same price range as a Ceritone anyway. Plenty of Marshall tones in that Marshall.

I see you have a 5150 III listed as your amp and have heard the crunch channel is supposed to get a great Marshally sound. If the crunch channel on that doesn't seem to do it you could always go for one of the good above suggestions or just get an old Marshall JMP or JCM800 and throw a tubescreamer in front. 8)

I've heard folks mention ghost notes as well, but don't know what is either?

It's a faint note that follows the fundamental note...very common in old Fender amps. Sometimes its desirable, especially for some "rootsier" styles, whereas some others find it annoying.

I believe Jerry's rig is 100% Friedman these days.

I'm really intrigued by David Bray Amps. I'm considering building a second rig using one of the "45/50" custom-built heads and a modest pedal board. It might go against conventional wisdom, but to my ears, the version with the solid state rectifier sounds a little better than the one with the tube rectifier. From the clips, the amount of range between "clean" and crunch just at the guitar's volume knob is pretty impressive

It's not an $800 Marshall MA, but it's also not a $4,000 modded Marshall with a fancy name. Middle of the road if you will...

The undesireable modulation type sounds one gets, especially on the neck pickup, with the volume up around halfway when playing single notes . Older Marshalls are underfiltered. It's not worth upping the filtering because of how that affects the amps tone and feel.

We talking tone filtering or power filtering?

Why buy a clone? They are a dime a dozen and every amp maker's starting point. Just jump on ebay and buy an old JMP 2203 for under a grand.

Yeah he is  I just recently saw them in concert and he was using 2 Marshas.
