I've reviewed the historic origins and usage and of course you were correct about that.
In the current "climate" it's perceived differently and a shedload of liberals has been posting it online, unfortunately intending on the worst-possible meaning.
I'd guessed earlier that in light of this, it wouldn't be a good idea to splash the "term" all over OTC as you did by including it in large, bolded letters in your sig.
That's all I've got brother. It was for the sake of OTC's longevity that I asked you to remove it.

There is a lesser know meaning of 86; which it may have actually originated from before being picked up by industry. The mob used it as meaning 8 miles out, 6 feet deep to describe what to do with the body so it wouldn't be found. But that meaning lost weight a long while ago. 86 is now more associated with its current usage.
In Comey's case I doubt he meant is as a direct threat from him to the president. My speculation is it was meant more as an approval for others to do what is needed to get rid of Trump; mirroring the current rhetoric we see from many liberals. Removal by any means necessary, but leaving it ambiguous enough for others to form their own interpretation of what he meant and what actions to take.
Whatever the case it was a bonehead move by Comey. Still, prosecutors are going to have a hard time proving what he actually meant. So in the end it's going to add up to a bunch of political theater. But at the same time a line does need to be drawn for all the rhetoric we see against Trump from political figures and the media. All they're doing is inspiring people like Cole Allen to commit more violence.
Even though I don't care what he puts in his sig., yes I do think JD's use of 8647 in his signature was inappropriate given the context and JD's known hatred for Trump.
As you said, for the sake of OTC's longevity it needed to be removed.

But the volume of racial, ethnic, gender, and homophobic insults and posts that get tossed around here on any given day is pretty amazing, and suddenly the specific ordering of 4 numbers is offensive?

Had there not been constant, unhinged calls for, and acts of violence from the left towards the conservative right since Trumps first term, it might have been considered fairly innocuous. Considering the current political climate? Not so much.
