if you still gig with a 412 cab, why?

For me it's the extra internal cabinet volume that does it. Nothing shakes the earth like a ripping full stack!

I would have argued that until I saw your full stacked avatar. ;)

who unearthed richie's thread?

at least one 4x12 is required to sit my beer, coke tray, ashtray, hairspray, and hair brush on.

Either I am extremely weak or some of you are roided up, but there is no way in hell that I can carry a full 100 watt head in one hand and a splawn 2x12 in other!!!

2x12s are way bright.

No way - well, maybe some are

As mentioned, my Petersen 2x12" cab loaded with Creambacks sounds as thick as molasses with plenty of beef to the tone. I wouldn't have believed it could be possible a few months ago. I am pleasantly surprised.
My Framus 2x12 sounds great too, just not as good as a solid 4x12. My Randall with v30's kills!

I routinely carry my 50 watt head in one hand and an Avatar Vintage 112 in the other. Not quite as heavy, but I'm sure I wouldn't be able to do it if I didn't workout regularly.

The problem I have with 4x12s is fitting them into a car and other cramped spaces. I'm no strong man, but I honestly don't find them particularly heavy. The side handles make them very easy to carry around.

I'm really liking the Marshall 1965 cabs (24" by 24"). Actually preferred it to a newer Marshall 4x12 and it fits in a car. Only problem is that a full-sized head looks silly on top.

Edit: But on the plus side, with a rackmount head on top, I look like a giant standing next to the rig because it looks so similar to a 4x12.

What I find interesting is that people complain about moving a 412, but I rarely hear complaints about move PA subs, tops, power amps etc. Sure some modern ones are lighter, but my PA gear I have is a pain to move. To me moving gear just comes with Gigging.

Also we seem as a group of musicians to be pretty judgmental about what people use. On TGP, I feel like its a cardinal sin to use a big 100Watt tube amp head on a 412 cab or two, instead of a 15Watt 112 combo.

I am sorry I started this thread the way I did! I went from using 412s for years to 212 cabs, only to come back to 412 cabs as my number one! Whoohoo!

Variety is the spice of life. I will now have some 412s, a few good 212s and want to buy another ported 212 cab.

Seems to be par for the course... musicians as a whole are pretty judgmental about each others playing, gear, appearance, taste in music, women, food... you name it.

+1

For me it all depends on the gig (size and band), I use anything from a 1x12 to 2 4x12s. For a small club/pub, a 1x12 is plenty but if you are playing an open air gig, you quickly discover that even a half stack 'disappaers' on a big stage.

I judge this response to be sheer and utter nonsense. :D

I'm tellin you guys if you want the best compromise in a 4x12 find one of DV Mark's 4x12's, slightly smaller in size than a typical 4x12 (My bogner XTC in a std headshell fits perfect) and I can carry the thing down my stairs in one hand, 43 lbs and it sounds great! Bought it brand new from GC for under $700...I'm betting they still have some in stock. Best cab I ever bought. Just sold one of my Bogner 4x12 and my Mesa 4x12...have no use for them any more. I did keep one Bogner 4x12 for in the basement so when I gig I can just move my head but I'm tellin ya, the Neo's in these are special European made spkrs and they're great and just keep getting better as they break in. Best move I ever made buying this thing, in my top 7 guitar purchases ever IMO. Check it out, less than half the weight of typical 4x12.

I give up. What is a DV Mark?

DV Mark? Google it, they are an amp manufacturer, Italian I believe. Guitar Center carried them for a while, great reviews and Frank Gambale plays them and has a sig model...now you are going to ask me who Frank Gambale is right? :-)
All of their stuff is super light weight for easy transport. Tried a few of the amps and they were really nice as well.

Yep, Italian. I've read good things. But then again, most know my views on magazine reviews..... :D
