Im thinking of ordering a Bill and becky LX500L?

I had one and didn't like it at all. Thin, shrill, trebly...I tried turning it around, adjusted it low, high...still didn't sound good to me. I moved to Anderson pups and have been happy ever since. Nuno does have great tone, so it works for him. Of course, YMMV.

I have one if you wanna buy it. It's got the extra shielding. Sound-wise it reminds me of Duncan Distortion. I don't like how it looks in my guitar.

The Bill and Becky L500XL is a great pickup, i had one that i ordered from them back in 2002 and it was definitely the Dimebag and Nuno pickup, as it has that cocked wah tone with a shit load of output. It wasn't thin sounding at all, had a chunky tone but still with that razor sharp attack and midrange slice. Kind of like the old Duncan Distortion from the 80's.

I also had the other Bill Lawrence L500XL which i think is referred to as the BLUSA L500XL model. Its not the Bill and Becky one. It sounded shrill, hollow and lifeless. I hated it. It was TOTALLY different to the Bill and Becky L500XL.

So yes, the Bill and Becky model is awesome  The other one sucks IMO!

+1..words can't describe how shitty the stock BLUSA sounded in my N4....it reaches into the same ballpark but it's like half the field is missing and they half that is there is the bad half full of divots and rough edges.

Funny, I was gonna suggest the Duncan Distortion or a Dimarzio Super Distortion. You really need a British-style high gain amp too. An ADA mp-1 would probably do the Nuno thing in spades.

I was going to do the pickup flip on my g/f's N61 but after 3 days of catching up on the Lawrence pickup drama between both sides..
And talking to both..
I was told Flipping the pickup is a myth, a nice story that has become associated with “Dime”, it's nothing but a fiction. There is no different between the bobbins. The only difference is the direction of the magnets in relation to the neck pickup. That is not unique to the L-500XL...

A guitar player I played with years ago used the Lawrence pickup religiously, Sounded good through my rig too..
I might have to try option with my g/f's guitar..

Also, i don't know how it is now.. but back when i ordered mine i waited like 2 months for the pickup from when i ordered it. I know that was a LONG time ago but i thought i'd mention it anyway.

If i needed that kinda tone now, i think i would just go and grab the Duncan Distortion instead of the L500XL. It gets you close enough to the L500XL tone and sounds every bit as good IMO!

I had a set of 500L's given to me, and they were really harsh sounding. I won't use them again.

I can vouch for this. I noticed exactly the same thing, I also noticed that the blades on the bill and becky pickup are 2-3x thicker than the BLUSA. I might have some old pics to post of the blades if anyone cares to see

You're correct, the BLUSA blades are way way thinner than the Bill and Becky blades!

Also for what its worth, i still believe that Dime used the Bill and Becky models even though he told everyone he used the StewMac ones. He was well known for keeping info on his rig secret and threw people off with misleading info, just like EVH did. So it wouldn't surprise me if he was using the Bill and Becky models and just telling people otherwise to throw them off

The Bill and Becky pickup sounds SO much like Dime's tone, its crazy. I had the Randall RG100ES and the Furman PQ-3 too, and with that setup and the Bill and Becky L500XL you get spot on to Dime's tone  I tried the BLUSA pickup with the same rig and it was nowhere close... It was so thin and shrill sounding that it was like an icepick to the ears

I have a l500xl in the bridge of a mahogany Agile explorer copy. Sounds pretty damn good. May sound kind of crappy in some less substantial guitars. I think if you put it in a superstrat shaped guitar, it may thin it out...

Is the SD Dimebucker even close to either?

IMO the Dimebucker is closer to the BLUSA model. The Bill and Becky version sounds bigger and meaner than both the BLUSA and Dimebucker.

I like the Bill and Becky version a LOT. It's bright and mean. It def sounds a lot like Dime, IMO.

The BLUSA was the worst pickup I have ever used. So shitty, I can't describe it.

I still have the BLUSA in my Padauk N4, and honestly it does not sound bad enough for me to change it. However, the BLUSA sounded just awful in every other N model I had it in.

I have two N models with the B&B version, and I love it. The others have various Duncans.

Oh in that case I wont bother, I already have the cold sweat in my Charvel.

Lol cheers

I had no issues with it in my Alder either. I did end up swapping it, but more for a change than any issues.

Apparently different story in other models
