initial delay experiments..

i've had the damage control timeline for a few days now...pretty sweet sounds. i'm gravitating to multi head delay and dotted quarter note setting ala U2. but it does chorus/leslie-ish stuff, reverse, looping, slap echo, tap tempo, etc.

i ran it in front of the fender superchamp xd in mono, then in stereo in front of the XD and the tol 100,
then finally in the loop of the eggie, returning to eggie loop and out of second out of the delay to front of XD

i'm starting to familiarize myself with the filter/grit/smear/depth/speed controls in efforts to do tape emulation.
the tube interaction is a little light.

right out of the box it didn't sound as deep and rich as my replex did, but it has so much more real time control and storage.
four user preset locations on the face of the unit,
two discreet preset sounds storable per user preset location, accessible via the unit's 2 footswitches,

midi in and out, true stereo in and out, optional expression control of any of the parameters via midi...haven't explored that yet.


HOWEVER
the pigtronix echolution came today. that one made a lasting impression on me at namm 08 and i finally got to put it through it's paces today.

immediately the tone was much more alive and silkier than the timeline. very much like my old eh memory man deluxe i had back in the day, which i loved except for the noise and input clipping.

the echolution had a bit more internal noise/hiss than the timeline but the sensitivity and buttery warmth was addicting. much closer to the replex that way.

the pedal is sorta divided into two sections...modulated delay and tap tempo digital delay.

there were some very cool modulation and trem type effects to be had on the modulation side of the pedal, and a bazillion switches for the wacky EH vibe, and nice analog warmth on the tap tempo/digi side.

also expression jacks for real time control of delay times, etc.

after messing with both pedals i came to the conclusion that both were great, and i wished i could combine the best of both with some of the tonality of the replex.

i wanted to cook up some clips but ran out of time. perhaps within the week. and hopefully my space echo comes back by then....delay shootout!

yup the replex is just so fat and toneful and enjoyable. i love that thing but it is sorta limited for a digital unit and should have at least tap tempo.

i find the timeline lacking in the input level area...there is no input level control, only a fx mix knob, yet it seems to handle a wide range of input levels from instrument to loop line level.
the echolution and replex have an input level/drive control with LED clip indicator which is very valuable to me and maximizes the input section.

the timeline also doesn't allow you to control the 2nd and 3rd head volume in the multihead echo which is a bit limiting. but every setting on the timeline is storable and recallable via midi or on one of it's user preset positions so that's hip. i wonder if adding that input drive level control on this unit would take it into the next level...it's just not super buttery like replex/echolution. or 2290

i had my friend who is a line 6 DL4 fan, and who's DL4 presets are the only ones I've ever really liked the sound of, try the timeline and he was finally able to hear what i've been saying about the line 6 tone suck...the lightbulb went off!

i'd still like to mess with empress superdelay, skreddy echo, and time factor for a day. i hear the time factor updates are great sounding and more tape analog approved.

I wish every digital delay pedal had a switch for line level. Those Replex and Echolution pedals are damm pricey.

Pretty dead on review Pat. I owned all and still own the modded Replex. The Timeline was just "too digital" for me. The Echolution was very cool but a bit noisier than I would have liked and it just had its own flavor going on. I'm interested in trying the new one from Fuchs, however, it is another tube driven delay. The only other delay I use is the TC Vintage Delay, even though many say it is exact as the T-Rex Replica, it isn't. It has a very cool compressed feel and doesn't suck tone like the three Replicas I tried. Too bad it is discontinued although you can still find them used. And also with you....

i actually think the timeline in the loop of the eggie is great because it is being driven harder and the digital-"ness" is hidden in this config better than out front.

and-
hitting the timeline out front with my tone press or hermida dual boost helps achieve better touch sensitivity and makes the effect speak more clearly.

but that skreddy is really sounding great in the way the echoes decay and twirl....

that's pretty dang tape echo accurate!

I don't love it, it fit the bill for what I was looking for at the time but yes the volume drop is a killjoy

Im a tape echo freak and i still think the replex is the closest to the real deal. Have u tried the Electro Harmonix memory man?

had the original and it was great but not as echoplexy as the replex, and input clipped in a digital way when hit hard, and noise was a factor.
the echolution does a great job saddling between the replex and the memory man with better input control and noise than the ehMM

i have the echolution and think it is a fantastic pedal.

tons of flexibility and sounds great.

i have not had noise issues with mine.

it runs great with egnater gear!

I picked up a Keeley moded DL4 a few months ago, and it rocks. It sounds better than the stock DL4 and the volume drop issue is gone as well. It actually boosts the signal a tad, which I kinda like...

Have you tried the Chandler SDE-2 Stereo Echo? It's pretty limited in that it hasn't got any presets or multi head modes, but when it comes to modulated delays in a digital format that is as close as you will get an Echoplex, this is it!

Well Based on the clips, I can tell you that it does sound like the old Space Echo I tried. Id have to hear it in person. With that said, Im not picky when it comes to delay and Im more then happy with my old boss dd3
