I've been happy with my DD-20 but been thinking about upgrading... it has all the features I like, but if I can get a better tone out of something else then I'll dump it :)

I just picked up one of these. I'll letchas know what I think...

I picked up a Keeley moded DL4 a few months ago, and it rocks. It sounds better than the stock DL4 and the volume drop issue is gone as well. It actually boosts the signal a tad, which I kinda like...

i like the dl4 being hit with a compressor and drive pedal but there is still the milky plastic a/d sheen it puts on things from the player perspective i dislike. the audience won't notice though.

Have you tried the Chandler SDE-2 Stereo Echo? It's pretty limited in that it hasn't got any presets or multi head modes, but when it comes to modulated delays in a digital format that is as close as you will get an Echoplex, this is it!

i borrowed a friends sde-1 back in the day and it was cool but very rolled off on the direct sound for my tastes

it was down to this and the replex when i did a delay shootout at tone merchants eons ago, but the replex had the tone and vintage fatness contest won.

i'd say the ideal delay pedal would have:

1) size of the replica

2) input gain, tap tempo/modulation duality and bucket brigade smoothness of the echolution

3) in/out level control, tube warmth and gritty multihead vintage sound of the replex (and pretty blue glow)

4) midi storage/recall, real time flexibility, low/high input handling, and looping of the timeline

5) warble controls of the skreddy

Fwiw mentoneman it was your clips of the replex through the mojave that sold me on it, much appreciated. I think I bought mine from sah5150 as well, small world in this thread.

I had a Replica and didn't care for it much. Honestly, it sounded like it was trying to hard to be analog sounding...if that makes sense.

brotatoes you would LOVE to hang with a soundman friend of mine from montana.

became a biochemist so he could cultivate the ultimate shrooms! there's ambition for you...micellial layers forming earth's largest biosphere, only tripping on the seasonal equinoxes with enough dose to make an elephant dance the macarena, smelling with his ears, thinking a greatful dead concert was the nicest thing 10,000 people ever did for him....oh my...

It has been years .... but ya I have been there. Seeing sounds and what not. All I can really say is trips are for kids silly rabbit. I do not have 12 hours to catch a buzz these days. But I was a huge fan at one time. That is me in my avatar getting ready for the next one.

i guess i just dont hear what you dudes hear in the digital units,..especialy considering what you are paying for them!..i have a modified alesis midi-verb 3 (i put the mix pot in an old volume pedal, connected via 6-wire communication cord),..a rack mount multi-vox mxd-5, (stopped working, just makes a "wobbling" sound) and a moog 104z that imo is the be all/do all..with out a doubt the best available at this time ...it has every feature,..and best of all amazing sounds!!...virtualy noiseless!! i never turn it off!,..with the addition of the expression pedals the options are endless ....only negative about it is the goofy size.

by the way..the rack mount multivox mxd-5 analog delay is for sale,...$75 you fix,...$225 i fix

I'm pretty neurotic about delays.

One that sounds vintage analog fat to color and thicken tone
and one transparent ducking one to create hall to stadium size and motion

pedal + rack = :cheers2: :inlove:

Cool review, thanks. I still have my replex and love it, I always thought the damage control unit looked cool and thought about pulling the trigger but I would rather a have a few different small boxes, I get frustrated dealing with too much in one unit. I stumbled across this on youtube the other day, this might turn out to be a killer delay. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2yDjVsnGN8

yup the replex is just so fat and toneful and enjoyable. i love that thing but it is sorta limited for a digital unit and should have at least tap tempo.

i find the timeline lacking in the input level area...there is no input level control, only a fx mix knob, yet it seems to handle a wide range of input levels from instrument to loop line level.
the echolution and replex have an input level/drive control with LED clip indicator which is very valuable to me and maximizes the input section.

the timeline also doesn't allow you to control the 2nd and 3rd head volume in the multihead echo which is a bit limiting. but every setting on the timeline is storable and recallable via midi or on one of it's user preset positions so that's hip. i wonder if adding that input drive level control on this unit would take it into the next level...it's just not super buttery like replex/echolution. or 2290 :D

i had my friend who is a line 6 DL4 fan, and who's DL4 presets are the only ones I've ever really liked the sound of, try the timeline and he was finally able to hear what i've been saying about the line 6 tone suck...the lightbulb went off!

i'd still like to mess with empress superdelay, skreddy echo, and time factor for a day. i hear the time factor updates are great sounding and more tape analog approved.

Im a tape echo freak and i still think the replex is the closest to the real deal. Have u tried the Electro Harmonix memory man?
FWIW, I dig the U-Audio UAD2 laptop card running the Cooper Time Cube so much I'm considering using the lap top for a processor. Alternatively I gotta get a Time Cube...
