Interesting '72 Gibson Les Paul is actually a 1980 LP, now an ‘81!

I made him an offer and hopefully I’ll be going to pick it up later today. I’m keeping the paint job. It reminds me of Eric Clapton‘s fool SG.

Edit; he took my offer so I will be going to pick it up tonight and post pictures. And then I’m definitely going to get those drop and drive pick ups for it.
dude I am super stoked for you....

I’d be tempted to just leave it alone. I think its cool.
You stole that for that price IMO.

How are the frets? Most of those have really low frets and are hard to play until you get a refret

Man, that's one of the coolest and fun custom paint jobs I've ever seen on a guitar - front & back - what a steal since it plays well, congrats! 68-75 LPs are tougher to pin down on serial number, here's a good link if it's still legible after the painting.

You might want to reach out to Gibson & ask them - it's unique enough (and VERY 70s) they might dig a little and even give it some press. It would be utter blasphemy to do this today to an unmodified 50 year old LP, but I'm betting it was painted in the 70s when they weren't revered, it was just a Norlin era average guitar. I gutted all the electronics, hardware & added a mini toggle switch to my 79 LP standard in mid 80s with zero thought about value or keeping it original, only paid $250 for it!

I also like the paint job. Plus I wouldn’t count on anything being underneath as most re-fins get down to the wood before doing the new paint.

According to the owner he had it painted 10 years ago and bought it in 1980.

According to the serial number look up this is a 1973, if somebody notices it I got it wrong please let me know.

New frets... Wild paint job.... you dig it.... $1500 is still good! Play the hell out of it! Something like that its not like it being older or younger would add value to it. Good score. 73 or 80 is still Norlin era.. right? LOL

call me crazy but I have never seen dates in the cavity like that before.

these are hidden under metal plate with pickups. Typical for 80's LPs

Serial clearly shows it’s an 81. First number is an 8 and 5th number is a one. The body was a hold over from late 80. By the time it was put together and stamped it was in 81. I dig Eighties necks, had an 83 custom that was damn nice guitar. Your’s looks to be stamped Jan 5, 81 and the 716 puts it as Nashville made. It was the 716th guitar stamped that day.
