The following is armchair generalization but I still think it holds water…
You could say you just can’t beat biology and our natural instincts even when you try and social engineer them away.
Men want to be providers and don’t care about a women’s economic status but more about attractiveness, compatibility for companionship and possibly someone who wants to have a family and would be a good caretaker.
Women care about a man’s economic status and looks because they’re biologically driven to be provided for and they want what they think are good genetics for children.
We have socially flipped our biologically driven roles and are basically swimming against the current on what makes most men and women happy. I said most, not all.
A white collar woman will reject a blue collared man, even though he may be attractive, supportive, loving and potentially a good Father solely because she is biologically driven to be with a man who provides more than she does.
A White collar man would go out with a woman who works at a fast food place if she was attractive and had compatible personality and intelligence.
