Is Malmsteen mailing it in?

I just wish he would interject some actual space and varied phrasing. It's just this diarrhea of notes. Incredibly executed diarrhea I'll give you but just as exhausting.

You know, if he can put the whole band backstage and out of sight he could probably get 5-6 more stacks across the back. He could also get his name bigger on that screen. Someone in his entourage should mention that to him.

Wow that was painfull. Maybe he had a few too many drinks before that gig.

:D That's the logical next step. Not that it would be a large one anymore... ;)

People go to see Yngwie Malmsteen not the Yngwie Malmsteen Band.

I think that's exactly what he thinks too. But that misses the point that people that are not coming to his show anymore are staying away because it it just him and no Band. I know bashing him is easy, but I really was a fan, actually I started playing also because of him. But he really is wrong now...

Is the whole concert like "this"? Or all of his concerts? Was that the opening song? It's not zakk wylde level bad he still can play coherently (and seems more warmed up in the second piece) and everybody has an off performance here and there but I don't know if he'd even be interested in getting his shit together. His standard response to negativity was to get a drill. Why? To pierce the fuckers head so that shit would start to come out.

I think he gets too carried away with visual showmanship and not the actual performance. He's a wild man onstage. Is he mailing it in? I don't know really...certainly not his best but the number of shows he plays there are going to be some stinkers imho.

I love the guys playing but didnt get anything of his since Triology which I didnt think was on par with Rising Force and Marching out. I did see him just before the release of Marching out in Detroit...he didnt suck then ;)

People love to hate the guy. Everything gets old after a while but from Alcatrazz to Marching out he killed the guitar world. No one was really playing like that and now look at all the people sweeping arpeggios and blazing fast runs. One of the top guys on influencingRock/Metal players...Hendrix, EVH/Rhoads and Malmsteen.

He has been playing like that live his whole career. He rarely plays the rhythms to his songs, he just noodles over the keyboard beds. I think that in his mind, he is putting on a show. I'm sure that there are still first timers there and for them, seeing him do his thing for the first time, is probably still amazing. For us that have followed his career, it would be nice to see him slow down and play the songs as they are. I think that Yngwie as a player has gotten technically more competent, but that is also his downside. He doesn't slow down any more. To me, his best playing was in Alcatrazz. Sure it's 80% of the speed, but his phrasing was so much better when he would sit on a note for two or three bars.

I just think he looks ridicules. It's the things he does in stage. Kicks in the air, his hair, clothes and so on...

Well he certainly hasn't been playing that lazily and sloppy his whole career if he didn't play all the rythm parts live. I am a huge fan .. or rather...WAS a huge fan. I am one of the only people that thinks Eclipse was epic and the peak of his career. Loved the songs and fire on that album. So many killer arpeggio sequences/phrases like Motherless Child or Demon Driver. Anyway, i'd say live, he could still bring it pretty accurately up until the late 90's. If you compare his live stuff with Alcatrazz and his first band all the way up to playing on the Odyssey tour and even later, the notes were still precise and the phrasing wasn't aimless. Now, it seems he is board as hell and slurs half the notes. I mean what is with that instrumental "spell bound"? That's a total sack of shit live and I can't see how anyone would think that was awesome. His timing now is what is clearly off to me. A real shame seeing as he could still have a good time performing but instead, slow down the playing and make the notes count. I guess thatwhen you have played the harmonic minor scale 5 billion times and in just about every song, there is really no where else you can go and you just say screw it, my audiences are small, mostly dudes, and nobody is better than me except Bach or Vivaldi. You guys all suck. How much did i make tonight?Interview? Don't waste my time.

I still dig Yngwie. I hear some good things in there and I still wish I could play like him lol

i saw him in detroit with dio in 01, and he was pretty good. he did all the goofy guitar swinging moves, and was kicking picks into the crowd with his skinny legs, and fat upper body. I caught two. it was like watching yosemite sam, but he played much better than this video.

I find this to be one of his best recordings. I do not find that these acoustical instruments and an electric guitar do fit especially well together but props to Malmsteen for getting out on stage there. I do not think you would fin another rock guitarist who could do that. That kind of performance exposes all your weak spots. Just no way to hide even small mistakes and i think Malmsteen did exceptionally well.

Yngwie has been an egomaniac and a douchebag for nearly his entire career but he always had the playing to back up his mouth and actions. Nowadays he's a fat half asser that is in fact mailing it in. Some people may argue "but the world of guitar wouldn't be the same without him" and to that I would agree completely but let's look at some of the legendary players that have influenced how guitar is played today. Slash, Zakk Wylde, EVH, Kirk Hammett, Dave Mustaine, Kerry King, Paul Gilbert, and so on. All of these guys can play as good as they could in their prime or better. Sure Kirk may also be mailing it in but he has proven that he can still play the old stuff and his solo on the new Exodus song is pretty sweet. These guys all kept up their chops for the most part, some more than others but they can all still play. Yngwie can still play but I just don't think his heart is in it as much as his need for a paycheck.

..... and for a guy that emphatically says he doesn't like donuts he sure looks like he's had a few.

Without wanting to disrespect anyone...Yngwie completely changed the game in the eighties...I cant say the same for your boy Kirk Hammett, who just may have the absolute worst vibrato ever committed to tape. I agree with you about Mustaine, but Hammett is amazingly sloppy live (I have witnessed this many times). Also, please dont put Kerry King in the company of the players you mentioned above. Take that Kahler off of him and he might as well turn the amp off. Completely useless. That being said, Yngwie's early albums set the bar for the post-VH players back in the day. That's a fact.

I thought this was a good one too!
I really like his performances.. I mean, he is getting old, but I think he still plays pretty cool..

Wow he's really losing it... Especially at the 5:00 mark.

Wankery at it's best!!!        I am glad i saw him back when he mattered!!!

Remember guys, we aren' t talking about his past work or the fact that he was a trend setter and a king among kings ("once a king, always a king, all I want, is everything.." lol...one of his lyrics off fire and ice). He is all that, He's a legend, he's badass. He's a fat egomaniac and doesn't give a f_ck because he still has blistering speed. My argument is that he just doesn't give a shit anymore. He slurs a lot of phrases and speeds things up because he can't wait to get to the end of the show. It must be a strange state of mind knowing how awesome you are but also be bored to tears by what you do...yet you continue to put out the same crap because it is your identity and Japan and eastern Europe (and maybe 400 people in the states will buy it.) I haven't bought anything since War to end all wars....which was the Malmsteen album to end all my Malmsteen album purchases.. :D

I've seen him two times and agree that looks like a fool when he does the leg kicks and throws his guitar around his back. I'll bet everyone working the tour is just afraid to tell him.

Yeah, i saw him live once and he did the guitar spin like 20 times. Add 20 kicks to that.

I mean, its cool if he does it 2 times, but cmon man.
