Is the SD JB pickup considered a tight pickup?

I've got a JB made in around 1999 which came out of a Jackson USA made JJ1. It isn't all that tight, but I may be doing something wrong as far as height. Are JBs considered a tight pup?

I don't think it's very tight either. I've had 2 in 2 different guitars. Thought it sounded great for leads, but in the end it was the mush that got to me.

If you like the JB but need more focus and need it to be tighter, check out the Anderson HN3.

I see. Thanks for the comment. My JB is not tight at all, I have to use an OD pedal with the bass rolled way way down to get it tight, and it does sound good like that but still it seems that a lot of people say they are tight. My guitar is mahogany with maple neck and a rosewood fretboard.

I have a JB in my '89 Charvel and I like it. It's got a little more bite to it than my Aldrich, which has a little more snarl. I don't think the JB is a very tight pickup though. That's why I like it though.. it's a pickup with a lot of feel to it compared to something like a Duncan Distortion which feels and sounds tight but kinda sterile to me.

I don't consider it a tight sounding pickup, but I also don't think it's loose or flubby sounding. It's kind of in the middle. I love how they sound, especially in mahogany. They do sound a bit tighter in alder though.

OK so its probably not something I am doing wrong. Thanks. Not sure what I want to replace it with. Maybe a Duncan Distortion.

Seriously, an Anderson. Any of them. No pickup I've tried sounds as good for rock.

I'd say a Duncan Distortion is right up your alley then

Dave Mustaine played a JB forever, they're plenty tight enough.

maybe you've got a bad one?

if you're using it with a tone pot, that might be the problem. wire around the tone pot!

JB's have a rounded bottom end response and are looser than say, a Dimarzio Evolution or EMG-81, but they are still tight enough for sharp rhythm playing. Play the pup through a tight amp, and it will sound tight and respond faster.

I had a JB in a mahogany body/mahogany neck explorer and it sounded plenty tight for thrash to me. Amp really makes a difference in this equation though.

Hmm well, I play through a Voodoo Modded JMP Marshall. Should be pretty tight.. I really need a tight sound to get my riffing going. Otherwise I feel like I am fighting my guitar. Back when I had a Dual Recto I had a really hard time getting a tight tone I could use for metal. Sold that thing.

I have always used the JB for that type of music in Alder & Basswood body guitars..
The Ibanez guitars I used them in were Basswood, I always bypassed the tone knob..
And my Alder guitars only had a volume knob..
500K pots
The Pick up height around an 3/16 of an inch or a little more/less depending on the guitar..
Never had a problem getting tight sounds out of them..
Maybe the pick up just isnt right for you..

Hmm. Ok I'll set it up like this and give it a last try before giving up. Thanks, I'll report back when I figure it out.

What are you using it in Redrol??

I used to use this set-up in C,D,E & Eb and still get the same results..
I am using 10-52 strings also..

Its in a Jackson JJ1 USA. I have 11-56 strings on. Ernie Balls. I think the tone pot is disconnected but I need to check that again. It is a Trem spaced JB since the guitar has a Wilkinson. I tune to drop D or standard mostly. Drop C# for some songs.
