Is the SD JB pickup considered a tight pickup?

Funny enough Ian is my reason for starting. I got his Among the living setup. Marshall JMP, TC Electronic BLD, JJ1 (and RR1), and amp is modded by Voodoo amps. Ians was too.

Thing is my tone isnt that tight. It might be my Mesa oversized 4x12...

He was telling me they only punched Spitz in for solo's the rest of the time it was Ian you heard..
I met him once with a friend of mine in Philadelphia real cool guy he let my friend video S.O.D. from in between the barricade and stage with the security..
All he wanted was a copy of the show..

Try setting a side a good day when you can crank that rig and mess with the pick-up height..
If it doesnt work the pick up just isnt for you I guess..

Given Ians tones with this rig there has got to be a way to make it work! Maybe the pup is bad somehow though. Cool story, I freakin love SOD. Wish they were still makin music.

Yeh one thing that might be worth mentioning is..
I see the pick-up isnt labeled S.D. according to the S.D. site those are made over seas ..
I have had both versions and didnt notice any difference in sound..
My 2 ESP MII's have the non labeled JB's and they sound great..
But you never know when it comes to quality I guess...

OK I have a bit more information.

Tone pot is a 250k
Volume is not labeled but I am reading .560 on my meter the 250k pot reads .240 So I think this means that the volume is a 500k?

Tone pot was connected

the SD JB is labeled TB4L and is Made in USA stamped on the bottom , I am reading 18.2k Ohm on it.. which according to the web is about right

So I am thinking I am going to disconnect the tone pot and put the JB back in and adjust it.

Any help is appreciated.

Have you thought of swapping the magnet in the JB rather than trying a new pickup? It's an $8 modification, easy to do (at least from what I read on the Duncan forum LOL - about to try it myself) and supposedly swapping out the A5 in a JB for an Alnico 8 tightens up the low-end, or you could go with a regular sized ceramic and end up with a "Distortion-lite" - also tightening up the lows.

I'm going to try it with a Duncan Custom and make a Custom 8, methinks...

jhale667 is right, many of SD's pickups share the same coils with different magnets or pole pieces. If you put an extra thick ceramic magnet in that jb you will have a duncan distortion. The duncan custom, custom 5, and custom custom are all the same wind with ceramic, alnico V, and alnico II respectively.

If your playing metal and looking for a humbucker in the 17-18k range with a tight bottom end check out the Motor City Solution or Hell Baby. both are equally aggressive, the solution is crunhier/buzzier the Hell Baby is clearer with a larger bottom end.

Seriously, an Anderson. Any of them. No pickup I've tried sounds as good for rock.

+1 on the Anderson H3, great pickup. It was a little too hot for my tastes, so I went to a H2+, but I was playing more metal I would have stuck with the H3.

I don't really consider the JB a tight pickup. Both the Anderson's seemed tighter to me....

Nice. I just got a chance to crank my rig up a bit and this made all the difference in the world. MUCH MUCH tighter. I actually adjusted the pole pieces for the 'vintage' staggered setup. Raised the JB way way up compared to what I had before. Turns out that the trem spaced JB doesnt fit the plastic thing that well so it was hanging on the edges and wasn't raising even though I was turning the screws. When I took it apart I manually pulled the plastic thing apart and made it fit better and much higher.

I also disconnected the tone knob, I never use it. Thanks fellas.
