When you start looking towards the health costs of getting older, retirement, 401K, IRA's, Roth's, etc. the touring lifestyle simply is not reliable enough or dependable enough of a career. You do it because you love it, not for the money. He simply had a shift in priorities towards a future with a significant other, kids, etc.
I can't say I blame him. It's a shame, but at some point you have to question your talent versus your happiness. For some, touring just does not answer that inner call after a while.
