Can't blame him at all. These days, that type of money is a pittance, and if he wants to be able to live a meaningful life beyond his 30's, have relationships, have kids, etc., then it just isn't compatible with the touring lifestyle.

I think most of us eventually come to terms with our inner hooker if the price is right.
Sucks that they can have a decent following of nearly half a million fans yet it doesn't even afford them a pot to piss in. Helluva thing this industry was reduced to.
Knowing that, I concur with Josh Homme in that "If you expect anything from music, you expect too much. Just play for yourself and do it because you love it."

They have a pretty big fan base. 16-18K a year, and that's the entire band! So they're only pulling down a few grand each.

Anyway, I was just on iTunes last night looking for something - anything that would resonate with me the way these guys do in the "Related" section. Either I'm not as into the scene as much as I used to be or good metal is just hard to find these days. Either the vibe is there but the production value is shot or the opposite. These guys really stood out from the crowd to me and the singer had a lot to do with that.
Watched a few interviews on the guys a while back and the one thing that stayed consistent from album release to album release was that it's apparent that a family in the near future is where this guy's head and heart has always been focused. Hard to achieve the financial means when the fan base and industry you pour yourself out for doesn't reciprocate.
Sad deal. At least he's smart enough to choose his family and move on to peruse a means to effectively provide for them instead of trying to drag them through that mess.
32 years old. Half a million fans and he has to sell the goddamn jacket on his back to pay for a backyard wedding.

I take that as each of them has made a TOTAL of $18,000 over 6-7 years. That's like $2,500 a year per member.

Devin Townsend stated that he pulls about 5k / month, and that has to pay his band as well.

When you start looking towards the health costs of getting older, retirement, 401K, IRA's, Roth's, etc. the touring lifestyle simply is not reliable enough or dependable enough of a career. You do it because you love it, not for the money. He simply had a shift in priorities towards a future with a significant other, kids, etc.
I can't say I blame him. It's a shame, but at some point you have to question your talent versus your happiness. For some, touring just does not answer that inner call after a while.
