I've heard one blues song: I get it

That's based on the premise that if you've heard one blues song, you've heard them all.

And it's pretty much true. I'll give you that SRV was tremendous and took the genre about as far as it could go, but beyond that, it's pretty much jamming and noodling.

Let's face it. You can pretty much play any blues song on your stereo (that's like an ipod for you younger shredders) and jam along with it immediately. If that's a feature of the music, then the music isn't very advanced, ergo, it's no good.

No, I'll take my Allan Holdsworth, thank you very much.

Congratulations! You've just won the dumbass post of the month award.
I second that...all in favor say :jerkit:

My statement was a general statement about how we behave as humans. In our efforts to build ourselves up, we sometimes try attempt to de-legitamize that which we cannot attain. In the example of bashing some really, really great blues players, I would say that being technically proficient is irrelevant. It's not what you play, but how you play it.

I actually really enjoy listening to Holdsworth, but at the end of the day, guys like SRV, BB King, and David Gilmour can say more with three notes then guys like Holdsworth can in fifty. I would even be willing to put one of my favorite guitar players, John Pettrucci, in the same boat as Holdsworth.

Also I would like to hear your blues playing, help justify your statements.

meh, my nine year old girl can already play blues solos on her guitar...there's only 5 notes in a blues scale.
Unless you're BB King, then you just stay on one note for the whole solo and make painful faces.

I've got a one meg mp3 clip to post. Is there any way to embed the file directly into the post or does it have to be done thru youtube or some external url?

This is reminds me of when Eugene Martone went to Legba's to battle Jack Butler.

There's an option to "Upload Attachment" directly underneath the box where you enter the text for your posts.

Ok. ladies, here's a first mix, unmastered, of your old buddy axemeaquestion playing the axe.

There's obviously a lot more to the genre than E, A, and B. But I could see where you're coming from if you just listen to the "popular" blues songs on the radio or go see some hack bar band. All the tunes are gonna sound the same, but there's a lot more to it than it seems.

Blues is IMO one of the easiest styles to learn on guitar, but one of the hardest to master.

I just want to be clear on one thing. You like Led Zeppelin but hate the blues? Dude....

I get that the early Zep was blues based and ripped off. Once they deviated from that, their stuff got better.

Blues Hammer!

Sad. Funny.

(Has anyone seen "Ghost World"? This thread reminds me of the bar/blues scene so much...)

There were 6 last time I checked :poke:
7 notes in a major scale, 5 in a blues scale

3 if you're BB King.
5 in a pentatonic scale...the blues scale adds the flatted 5th to the pentatonic = 6 notes

Real blues players are self taught and don't know about this secret note.

What are those buildings with numbers on it?

I'm just gonna go ahead and say this...I really can't stand much of the blues either. I used to really enjoy listening to it, but after having blues and jazz shoved down my throat at music school and hearing one too many bad bar bands try to make Crossroads "their own" version, I'm sick of it. :dunno: I just can't get much out of listening to it anymore. I still get excited when I hear SRV and guys like Bonamasa and some of the blues-rock shredders, but as far as the blues standards like Sweet Home Chicago, Calidonia (Louis Jordan), Memphis Girl (Little Al), Further On Up The Road, Peter Green, basically that whole gritty Chicago style blues, I used to love it, but I'm just getting bored.
And you guys are gonna hate me, but I agree with axemeaquestion about Clapton. WAY overrated in my opinion. I've always felt like he got way too much credit. I love some of his songs, but as far as a guitarist, he's far from God. Good songwriter though.
If I had to say a guitarist was a god, (which is stupid in it's own right) I'd say Gilmour is a far better and more creative guitarist, with a much better and more recognizable tone.

Ok, go ahead and rip me apart now.

Oh and BTW, a standard pentatonic/blues scale is the following:
1,b3,4,b5,5,b7
You just take a minor pentatonic scale and add the flatted 5th. 6 notes
