I never thought i would use Jazz IIIs again, used to use it about 2 decades ago when i was starting out.
One of the forum member was kind enough to send some of the JP Jazz III that he wasn't using awhile back, it kinda sparked my interest in them again.
But it wasn't until i started using Ultex sharps awhile ago that I thought although they are great, they feel a bit bulky at times for fast picking (in my hand anyway). So I decided to try something like it but smaller, so the obvious choice was the Dunlop ultex Jazz III, 1.38mm. The result was stunning, almost immediately my picking has more accuracy and attack was more confident and precise.
So it looks like i'm going back to Jazz IIIs after 20 years! I really think the Ultex made a difference, combine with the iconic Jazz III shape, it's one really amazing pick.
I've been testing it with the JP, so far the JP is smoother and slicker in attack, I prefer the Ultex for the more immediate response and smaller size, which for made me more precise.
Sorry for the lengthy post, but I'm excited to know what you guys think about the Jazz III and their various incarnations.
Anyone using Jazz III ultex 2mm? That's my next one to try. Are they the same size as the Ultex 1.38?

I like the sharpness/accuracy of the Jazz 3's for picking, but for funk rhythms for example I need to feel like there's something more substantial in my fingers so I always go for Tortex Sharp 2.00's which are a perfect combination of the two.

I'd recommend these for sure!

Used the Jazz III's for awhile and then switched to the Eric Johnson version which have a little less pick noise...very cool.

Started using em over a year ago.

Use nothing else now... I've got 'em everywhere. The lil' red pick that could.

Interesting, I haven't tried these in some time now... probably 20 years. May have to revisit considering I just made a grip change. Maybe it's time to check out some new picks. I always found Jazz III's a lil slippery and smallish, though... My hands tend to sweat a bit.

I've used Jazz III's for a couple of years now off an and. I've recently decided to try a Red Bear little jazzer and its wicked awesome.

Fast forward to today and the only con regarding the RB is that the attack is very warm and round. It has great accuracy but the Jazz III gives some big oomph behind the attack regardless if its a 1.20 or a 1.50.

Other than that, I've tried the Tortex Jazz style picks (The green being the nicest) and they have a best of both worlds thing going on.

Try the Dava Jazz Grips. They are a hair bigger than the regular Jazz III and the rubber grip has helped my dry hands a lot. Failing that, maybe the JP Jazz picks.

Man, that was my problem with the original Jazz III 20 years ago. i stopped using them because it seems that I could never get a good grip, it felt too small.
But with the Ultex, the material seems to slice through the string with a little more bite. Of course my picking technique has taken many changes over the years. But the wide variety of Jazz III type picks are great, you're liable to find one that suits your personal playing style.

I like the Dava delrin picks. They are very similar in size and shape to the Jazz IIIs but I prefer the grip on the Dava picks.

cool, I've seen them around. have to give it a try. Are the materials (delrin) a lot different than the Jazz III?

I've tried a few of the red Jazz IIIs, including the regular, Bonamassa, and EJ. I liked the EJ the most because it has the most grip, and I'm not just saying that because I'm a fan.

I think they feel very similar, maybe the delrin is slightly softer.

Not sure if this helps but here are the picks I often use and here is a photo for size comparison and a small review for people who havent tried them:

I find ultex tones a little bit brighter but really nice for high gain rhythms, depending on the string gauge I use either .94 or 1.40. Im very happy with ultex and they never slide off from my hands. They dont have a slippery feel at all. I also like the sharp feature on the 1.40 for rhythm playin mainly.

I like using Jazz III 1.38 XL Stiffo for clean playing as it has a fuller voicing. But obviously could be used for any type of music. It has the logo on it which also serves like a grip texture. I really like these as well. I think they are a little bit smaller than the ultex but the difference is micro.

The Jazz Max Grip Carbon is a very cool little fella. I wasnt a fan of smaller picks but when I tried this I was amazed. It feels like you are not holding a pick but whatever you want to do with your picking hand actually happens instantly and you reach the strings somehow faster compared to larger picks. Thats how it feels at least. Hence I prefer these picks for mainly lead and solo work. They do make a difference in my opinion and feel faster for sure. For rhythms they feel good too but it feels like you end up missing a bit of the punch. For stuff that require extra precision (like meshuggah's bleed) they could be very cool. I also think these were the picks that did color the tone least among the picks I tried. Other than that, they have tiny zigzag line figured textures for extra grip. I dont feel like I need extra grip but they dont bother me nor they hurt my fingers as it was claimed by some people.

They are all very durable and the carbon fiber one seems to be the most durable.

I hope this helps but at the end of the day picks are picks :P hehehe

The Dava Jazz are nothing like the Dunlop Jazz imho. I tried them but didn't like them, they really flex where the rubber grip meets the pic and I can't stand that.

That said, I have been using Jazz III XLs for years and still absolutely love them!

Love Ultex Jazz III's. Once I tried them, I haven't bothered trying any other picks, they suit me perfectly! Maybe someday i'll try some other ones, but for now I'm in the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" mindset

as my OP stated, my new discoveries with the Ultex Jazz III really was a big improvement on my picking technique, it was instantly noticeable compared to my Ultex Sharps, which feels more bulky and sluggish in comparison.
What is it that you dig about the Ultex Jazz?

I switched to Jazz III's about a year ago after years of using Tortex. I bought several picks and liked these the best. I normally switch between the black Jazz III and the Tortex 1.14 Black Ice Jazz shape.

I have some of the Dava Jazz also. They are cool, but I generally grab my Dunlops first...

I would like to try the Ultex Jazz III, but I will have to mail order some. I do have an Ultex Sharp, maybe I should play with it to get an idea....
