You dont usually hear these used for metal, so I thought I'd record mine - they pair well with redbacks to fill out the mids
I definitely prefer them to k120sI have used them for metal in the past as well.
I think they are underrated speakers, and probably my favorite JBL
I couldn't ever hear much difference. They are all reconed with the newer style cone....I definitely prefer them to k120s
none of mine have been reconed so that could be the differenceI couldn't ever hear much difference. They are all reconed with the newer style cone....
I prefer the K's just cause I don't blow them twice a year.....
Perhaps they are the originals but I"m betting all the surrounds on your speakers are cloth and not paper. I've never seen a working JBL with the paper surround still intact.none of mine have been reconed so that could be the difference
or its placebo and my hearing is just shit lol
Amp was mi megalith betaDude what amp?
Nice cruncher’s bro’.
I enjoyed the grunting in the monster mutes.
The amp had a snarl..a Hermasson time release.
I digged the spanking of the brights..
Reminded me of Kim Thayil.
Dude, that guy is not that good so don’t get bummed bro’.
I think it was more about Kim as a supporting guitarist for Chris whom was a f’n cool guitar player who created his own tunings and wrote super rad songs amongst those otherworldly tunings & textures.
When dudes were still rad man.
Whadda’ we got Monster Truck or some shit?
Btw, I faithfully listen to the Spanish radio station everyday for a host of reasons and one beefy reason is music nowadays is a bit underwhelming.
There’s still G’s crunching the fuck of it,
-but they’re thinning’ out man.
Rockstars..Rockstar looking Rockstsrs..
are no longer Rockstar.
Rockstar is a great fruit punch energy drink!
The stereotype has gone up in a flash..
Biting the heads off bats, screwing your buddies girlfiend and calling him while your stabbin’ out that pootie is not cool man.
Riding Harley’s through hotels rooms..
will cause far more butthurt then the steezy’s worth in todays bullshit.
They paved paradise..and put up a parking lot.
Like I said before & I’ll honor it again Yoda’,
I’ll sell it all & go road dog it right now.
Let’s roll motherfuckers…including the jailhouse guard, we’ll need some of ‘dat yard dog swag for runnin’ the straight hustle.
The music?
We’ll figure that out when we have to absolutely play.
Real fucking Rock-N -Roll man.
G-N-R actually hitchhiked 1100 miles up the coast without that much rehearsal time..fire in the f’n hole it.
The amps we use will be whatever we can find that’s loud and we can dime out to the point of going up in flames.
Flames under the fingers..
Stooges kinda true sonic frenzy created from true frenzy..etc..
Burn down the town.
Run down the town’s super pastors daughter and knock her up!
Live fast,
Die young,
-and leave a good lookin’ corpse.
Word.
It depends on which year the JBL is original to. The Gray frame D120s were paper surround; the Orange have been cloth. All that I've owned have had the original cones. The Paper surrounds on the 69 gray frames I had, definitely was a cool 'raunchier' tone but both speakers had some cone cry.Perhaps they are the originals but I"m betting all the surrounds on your speakers are cloth and not paper. This Segeborn clip below around 2:32 is similar-ish to what I get with mine and what turned me on to them. Still too bright for you?Even Reza would think this has too much high end rasp
For blues they are a great close mic'ed speaker. If you look at what went into the manufacture it's a no-expense spared speaker and most everything else is a piece of crap by comparison. Heavy cast frame, massive hunk of alnico, 4" edgewound voice coil and a tight coil gap. There is a reason they are no longer produced and also a reason they are pushing up to the $400-500 range used. There are only a handful of other speakers that are on the same level and tbh none of them are being produced any longer either for similar reasons. In a world of shit manufacture we can't have good stuff anymore.Maybe they’re not the most close mic friendly speakers (not sure), but in person they’re incredible with a wow factor that can’t be ignored
Yeah I guess also with Segeborn’s clip and EVH using them clearly they can close mic well, maybe just harder, not sure. I prefer when a piece of gear like this is very full frequency and then you can just take away rather than add things the gear doesn’t have to begin withFor blues they are a great close mic'ed speaker. That’s not even approaching a high gain tone like the OP’s example. High levels of preamp gain coupled with modern amps that generally don’t round out the tone like vintage ones do when cranked tend to exacerbate high order harmonics which sound extremely buzzy with high fidelity speakers like those. Those 8khz-10khz (approximately) frequencies sound offensively bad to me with high gain. This Segeborn clip below around 2:32 is similar-ish to what I get with mine and what turned me on to them. Curious which speakers make this list. I know you like the Force 12's, but not sure if those are on it.There are only a handful of other speakers that are on the same level and tbh none of them are being produced any longer either for similar reasons. Any other big alnico chunk makes production costs too high for anyone to bother making them today. Another good example would be an EV SRO coffee can model I think.Curious which speakers make this list. I know you like the Force 12's, but not sure if those are on it.
Well maybe my setup or how I dial in amps is different than the OP, not sure, but I mostly play metal through my JBL’s and get something closer in that direction. I’m not much of a recording guy, but in person at least it sounds massive, huge punchy lows, chugs like nothing else (celestions sound weak comparatively) with crisp, biting highs that are addictive. There’s also in person a 3D quality where notes connect really well sorta like a iic+, which also sounds great through them. But I also like lots of different sounds including speakers on the exact opposite end of the spectrum tooThat’s not even approaching a high gain tone like the OP’s example. Yes, these are the reasons I love them too.with crisp, biting highs that are addictive. There’s also in person a 3D quality where notes connect really well
