Cool! I wouldn't mind trying the O100JM-SL.

yeah, I wonder how different all their transformers are.

They're just variations the good ones they've seen through the years. The O100JM-SL is the one George at Metroamp recommends for more of an early Van Halen tone.

george has got some OT's that he spec'd out from his older amps that are from heyboer and from what I've read there are many people that perfer that to the MM's. Even Marstran uses heyboer's but his own spec's from old trannys that he's spec'd out.
Personally I've tried both Heyboer and MM and I'll tell you that I'd take a Heyboer tranny any day over the MM's tone wise. The Heyboers are built more to in spec in the way there buil as to MM's which uses higher grade stuff which in my opinion gives off a different tone flavor. http://forum.metroamp.com/viewtopic.php?t=6391

yeah, I read that - the part where George states "The MM parts tend to have a more open, extended high end to my ears. Very complex tone, notes and harmonics jump out from under your fingers. They sound very alive. I also find them to feel faster compared the Heyboer parts. Which tend to sound and feel blusier, for lack of a better term. Slightly slower and more like a transformer that has aged 35 years. Both parts share a musical, three dimensional characteristic." I wanted the faster attack, that's why I went with MM.

The MM tranny clearly has more gain and responds in a more modern manner. I like it better.

They're pretty darn similar to me. I wouldn't pick one over the other. I guess this means I'll never worry about pay the extra $$ for a MM. What matters is if it was worth it to you mostly.

I wasn't aware that "gain" came from your tranny.

Yeah, I don't think it's supposed to - maybe becuase it is punchier, it seems like there is more gain.

I like the MM tranny, its not a huge difference, but I notice it sounds a bit thicker, fuller and more fluid....

yeah, tone is pretty similar but the feel of the amp is the big difference - hard to get that in a clip. I use to feel like I was fighting the amp a bit, now it feels like the amp is working with me.

I just checked these clips out.....the MM clip has more clarity in the mids which is to be expected. How loud were you running the amp?

That was my usual club volume - master on 3.

Yeah, I like the MM a bit better too. The sound suits my playing style a bit better than the one I took out.

Does the amp feel like your playing a different amp or is it just the variables of tone changed?

It defnitely feels different - before when I would do fast alternate picking stuff, or even legato lines, I felt like I was fighting the amp a bit - with the MM it feels like the amp is working with me - like the plexi does. It still isn't as good as the plexi is at that, but it is a lot closer, and I really like the 2203x a lot more than I did - I think the MM added 2 years to my playing :D

I agree with the fast picking it did sound like it was fighting back.. The MM gave more clarity and a nice top end. IMO it was a big improvement. I must say I am not a big fan for 800's, but love plexi's.

I dont like to sound to direct and boring but the MM sounds just way better. LOL. Almost like you had a blanket over your amp for the first clip and then removed the blanket and recorded the next clip. The MM has sizzle and depth, it sounds much more quality. I had one of these amps btw, for like 3 years, I think the dagnalls sound alright but I totally heard the difference with that MM.

I played a 800 for 15 years and loved it, but I definitely like the MM clip better. I have a MM in my modded DSL and I think it's pure tits.

If you crank your amp, yes, the OT will saturate.

But doesn't it have to be pretty muched dimed? I don't get the sense he had them dimed. Plus saturation and gain aren't the same thing.
