I decided to try and fiddle with the preamp valves in this amp to try and get a little bit of a better sound, it does sound awesome though.

I replaced the V1 slot with a Marshall 12ax7. The ones in the preamp were labelled 12AX7-B, I don't understand the significance of the B part but I think it's safe to interchange them.

I was under the impression that JCAs were shipped with Ruby's? Not these wank valves as pictured.

Anyway..

Do the Jet City's ship with 6L6WGB power tubes are did you change those? I am surprised the plate voltage is low enough to safely run 6L6WGBs....

Those are stock and unbranded. I'm not sure of the plate voltage.

So much for the theory that these are SLO clones - there's no way that's a SLO power rail just looking at the caps. They must have dropped the plate voltage.

Those are all just Chinese tubes. Ruby's rebrands theirs but they are all built in the same factory. I cant recall exactly but I think the plate voltage on mine was around 475. I changed power tubes and swapped some of the pre's in mine. Most of the pre's that were in it tested ok but I wanted to get rid of some of the shrill tones so I used a couple Mullards and a JJ.

I'm pretty sure they are supposed to be Hot Rod clones.

cool cool, congrats on the new amp!!
I really like the transformers painted blue..that awesome blue scheme they have going makes me want to pick on up hahaha

HR Plus circuitry.

That would explain why I think they sound like ass   . The SLO is the only Soldano I've ever played that was fantastic. All the Hot Rod's, Decatone etc are much lesser amps IMHO.

They're Soldano Hot Rod clones I believe.

So, do you think they're on par, or a lesser well tested form of Ruby's? I'm actually pretty pissed off about it, especially considering the one on the shop floor had Ruby's, I looked in the back. My friend who I demo'd the amps with said that it sounded the same as in the shop but I disagreed, prefering the one in the shop, this is before I knew they had different valves.

Thanks man!

I love it too.

I've got a cap change, a FX loop mod and a kt66/88 mod, - then - I'll be fully satisfied. Part of the reason I got this thing was to mod it. :D

Most new amps come with shit tubes, all used amps usually do too.

Do you think it's worth calling up the shop on false description since the shop floor model had Ruby's?

Nah, the tube thing is a given, whenever i buy an amp, i always re-tube regardless of what the seller sez, just so i know what i'm dealing with.

I guess so, I have enough 12ax7s around, JJ and EHX that I can use, I put a Marshall in the V1 slot, it's a replacement for one of the pres that my tech (the tech I go to, rather) put in, maybe an EHX for the loop buffer, JJ for the lead channel or something.

It's annoying though thinking that the 6L6s I've found that I like, TADs, in a 5150 anyway are £82.00 a quad inc tax. Since I'm hopefully going to be teaching more, my dad said he'll set up a company so I can get tax reductions on things like valves and guitar strings, that'll help a bit.

I did get £150 off the original price since the shop I got the amp from has stopped dealing Jet City's.

IIRC the Hot Rod Series are identical to the SLO aside from the transformers.

Really? That's odd. I didn't know transformers could make such a substantial difference. Well, I did, just not enough to separate one amp from another.

I can't imagine that's true. They sound very different. Plus that would make those Deyoungs worth over a grand.

Few parts in the circuitry are different (pot values, some resistor-values are different). Other than that they are (except for the trannies) very close. And the SLO offers this "crunch to clean" thing with a switch while a HR doesn't.

The JCA100 is less filtered compared to a HR100+ which is filt. identical to a SLO.
