John Mayer show in Houston

Like Alien said, he's a pop musician and good at writing crap that sells. His tone, i don't see the big deal either. It sounds like a Strat plugged into a Twin, not that hard to duplicate really.

But funny thing with me is, Mayer could be the greatest guitar player ever and i still wouldn't listen to him because i can't stand his voice, and i don't like his songs.

Van Halen's tone, I don't see the big deal either. It sounds like a PAF equipped Superstrat plugged into a raging Marshall, not that hard to duplicate really.

Petrucci's tone, I don't see the big deal either. It sounds like an Ibanez/Music Man plugged into a Mark series Boogie, not that hard to duplicate really.

Aldrich's tone, I don't see the big deal either. It sounds like a Les Paul into an overgained Cameron Marshall, not that hard to duplicate really.



My point? You could apply that thinking to anything if you have sufficient disdain for it.

Sorry, what? This doesn't make any sense. I haven't ever denied that I used to be a big Dream Theater fan, and I've also never denied being a John Mayer fan. I've hardly only recently got into him. Yep, I ripped Joey for it but it was nothing more than harmless teasing and I'm sure he knew that as we've discussed Mayer in the past both before and after that "ripping"

What does going to music school have to do with liking Mayer? Oh yeah I get it... nothing. If anything it just allowed me to see that I was missing out on so much being only into metal and other music of that ilk but it didn't have anything to do with me getting into Mayer, that came before I ever set foot inside the school.

Yeah, that Eric Johnson vid is awesome. Tones, and playing are stellar. His voice isn't my favourite either, or his compositions, but who can fault his playing or tone!?

I don't care about the playing or tone because the song was unlistenable to me. Obviously he can play and is one of the greats. Did I say he couldn't play or his tone was horrible? I said the song was crap to me and that is the most important thing. If that is your idea of good music then I don't know what to tell you.

What does playing sold out arenas or selling millions of anything have to do with someone's opinion or talent have to do with anything? There a millions of ultra talented artists out there that will never make, and more that have "made it" but have never been commercially successful. On the other hand, there have always been commercially successful artists with zero talent, or even those such as Milli Vanilli that had zero to do with there own albums or music and were just lip syncing. Does this mean they can't like anything without selling millions of albums either? Or are they just not allowed to criticize?

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion of whether or not they like something. Personally, I think some of Mayer's stuff is good, and some is completely unoriginal and derivative. That said, his Panama is absolutely terrible. I will agree on that. He does, however, have some very good playing and songs...most of which I don't know the names of. His live playing that I have seen videos of I have liked as well as his tone.
