Just bought my fourth Mark IIC+.

I've owned many Boogie amps. The best sounding ones were 60 watt non-EQ models. I could never get what I consider a musical low-end out of any of Mesa/Boogie amplifier. Like I said, the best was a blond 60 watt Mark IIC+ combo.

Right!?!?!!? I know three guys locally who have IIB & III 60w no-EQ amps as well and THEY ALL RIP!!

I FULLY AGREE that I could never get the bottom end I was looking for out of my Simul or 100W Marks. ONLY the Coli gets THAT TONE. The 60 watter doesn't have the big low end, but it SNARLS!!

It was either a factory upgraded 2C+ with 105 transformer before it was sold or it came back for the + upgrade when they first started doing them. Mike B couldn’t determine. Either way, this amp shined above all the others. It just had “that” sound. Like a dummies it was figured that if it sounded that great as a 2C+, it would be insane as a ++. Well, nope! It was never the same. The only difference between all of the other amps was that it didn’t have reverb. I even had a red stripe Mark III without reverb that killed.

In the end I sold off all of the 2C++ amps and now I own a Mark IVa.

Didn’t you have a Mark III++ as well ? You prefer the IVa to that as well I take it ?

I believe it. My first was a IIC HRG that I had Mike upgrade to a +, and then months later to a ++. I'll give you a guess which iteration sounded the best..

But then, my factory IIC+ DRG that I had Mike upgrade to a ++ was AMAZING. Best amp I ever played till I got the IIB Coli.

...So yes- there really is a difference amp to amp. All IIC+ sound good, but some of them are magic.

Didn’t you have a Mark III++ as well ? You prefer the IVa to that as well I take it ?

I had a blue stripe DG, a blue stripe C30 modded DRG and a red stripe DRG. I had a IVa and a JP2C. Yesterday I traded my Mark Five 35 for a Mark V.

FWIW I have a working theory that Mark IIIs without reverb are the best ones. III reverb sucks anyway..

Yep, upgrade/original it just doesn't matter...you can't pin a great one (from any company) on anything in particular. Just normal amp to amp differences. My first one, a GC find, 2C SRG was AMAZING as a 2C. I struggled on sending it in to Mike, as it was incredible as is. But, I had to find out what the + was all about. It came back amazing, but in a different smoother way...Looking back I wish I'd kept it a 2C and waited to find another original or upgraded C+.
But as great as it was, and the original HRG C+, HRG C++, they all pale to my Coli C+.
The king rules them all.

I had a few Mark III++ amps. The best was a long head. Like a fool I sold it for $1,200. I tried to buy it back... guy wanted $1,600. I couldn’t justify it. Yeah, these days I’ve been liking the Mark IVa. Just so many options and great tone. I got it for like 20% of the cost of the 2C+ amps.

I agree that the non reverb Mark III’s sound better. I believe any Mark series amp without reverb sounds better. I had a Mark III++ coliseum without reverb and that amp was insane. It was just too much.

I agree that the non reverb Mark III’s sound better. I believe any Mark series amp without reverb sounds better. I had a Mark III++ coliseum without reverb and that amp was insane. It was just too much.

I always disconnect Reverb in any of my C+.

Do you remove the pan or just unplug the Reverb cables?

Reason I ask is because when I switched the chassis of my SRG from combo cab to head cab I would swear I heard a difference and thought maybe it was the proximity of the Reverb pan. But I never got around to testing it or anything, it was a tight squeeze and I didn't feel like undoing it all! So I just convinced myself it was my imagination and that it sounded the same.

I just leave it unplugged. Mike B told me it’s the same as not having it at all.

Hands-down, the best Boogie tones I've ever experienced, was from a Mesa/Boogie Quad Preamp. Why I sold that preamp, I have no ******* idea? From the bottom/middle/top, it was absolute perfection.

You can use a shorting plug. Mike did that to the beast, reverb is no friend.
