Congrats on the gig!

Thanks man. It is a ton of material to learn. 2 hours, bits and pieces and mashups of like 30 songs.

Perfecto!!! Nice choice. Congrats on the gig. I'm sure you won't have any problems, but if you need help picking things up quickly there might be one or two 80's metalheads around here that can help out lol

Congrats on the gig James!! Nice choice on the Charvel!!

Awesome! Good Luck man!! I have The Candy Blue Charvel So~Cal & I luv it!
You'll dig it a lot :D

The deed is done. En route! Thanks guys.

Congrats on the gig and the guitar James! I have the exact same guitar and love it!

Charvel Quartersawn necks are awesome for floyd stability
Mine never get out of tune.

The only downzide for me is the 22 frets neck vs 24 but for your kind of gig / guitar used to play
I guess that would be perfect.

One last thing,
I strongly suggest that you install an EVH humbucker in the bridge. instead of the stock pickup for 80s stuff it would be perfect.

I have the exact same guitar with the EVH relic humbucker installed instead of the JB and it really made the guitar comes alive.
Cheers

While I agree that the EVH is a great pickup, the JB is perfect for this kind of music and guitar. It gets slammed on here frequently, but it's still one of my favorsite pickups. I'd probably have to guess many of those songs he'll be playing was originall recorded with a JB.

It comes stock with a Duncan Distortion. Isn't that cool for this?

Totally. Less bass heavy than the dimarzio distortion but will still get you in the ball park. Besides, it's all in the hands.

Huh. What would be the best bridge pickup for this guitar for the VH/Ratt/Lynch thang? DiMarzio Distortion? Super Distortion? JB? Holy Diver????

I love the Dimarzio Super Distortion for this stuff, but the JB is pretty much the standard, especially in a bright guitar. I was not a fan of the Duncan Distortion in an alder body guitar, but I have a maple Jackson that it sounds great in. Check the Duncan Distortion out in that guitar and if you don't dig it get either a Super D or JB depending on whether the guitar is really bright sounding or not...

Can work depending on the guitar, but I would go for DiMario Paf Pros for the 80s stuff, with this guitar.

Enjoy! - they are nice guitars. I always find the necks a little tacky, so I steel wool them to get that off and make them nice and smooth.

Steel wool the fretboard or the back of the neck?

Back of the neck. Fenders are usually a little sticky new. A little soap and warm water works, too.

First off, congrats on the gig...but I find it rather odd that with all your studio and equipment experience that you would have to resort to posting on here about what kind of gear you should use for this backup gig. You should have just been honest and said that "hey, I just landed this gig..everyone look at me and give me props" and left it at that. I at least could respect that. Because in no way do i believe that you do not know what kind of guitar to buy or use considering all your knowledge regarding gear. We both know that you know exactly what kind of gear you are considering the moment you applied for the job. But enough with the "look at me" and trying to mask it by asking ridiculous questions like that.
Not buying it.

I've been over to Mr Lugo's studio, and your assumtions are way off base. He has a small collection of Les Pauls/Strats/Teles, but no super Strat or 80s type gear. The guy was just looking for suggestions of what's out there currently. No need for you to be a complete ahole...
