First off, congrats on the gig...but I find it rather odd that with all your studio and equipment experience that you would have to resort to posting on here about what kind of gear you should use for this backup gig. You should have just been honest and said that "hey, I just landed this gig..everyone look at me and give me props" and left it at that. I at least could respect that. Because in no way do i believe that you do not know what kind of guitar to buy or use considering all your knowledge regarding gear. We both know that you know exactly what kind of gear you are considering the moment you applied for the job. But enough with the "look at me" and trying to mask it by asking ridiculous questions like that.
Not buying it.

Wow. Well buddy you don't know me at all. If you looked at the music I make now a days and the guitars I use it's a long way away from the 80's thing I did back then. I honestly don't know anything about new guitars like these, hell I didn't even know Charvel still made guitars. Either way who cares right? You seem like the one who's actually the attention whore.

James Lugo is a class act and good guy and very very humble. Many props to him and haters gonna hate.

Thanks Brad.

So I spoke to Charvel tonight about the guitar, one thing was I wanted to know what the stock string brand and gauge. Fender 9s. Also wanted to ask him based on the sound I need for this if he felt the SD Distortion was the best fit. He said the designer threw in a bunch of pups and felt the SD Distortion was the best for the guitar. I spent a few hours tonight listening to clips of JBs, DiMarzio Super Distortion and SD Distortion. Though I couldn't find a tit for tat sample of all 3 I found a few different compassion videos. On one of the video between the JB and SD Dis the JB sounded darker, lower intensity and more natural. The SD Dis was brighter, heavier and little processes sounding. Not in a bad way though. In another video between the jB and DiMarzio SD the DiMarzio sounded just plain better. It's weird cuz when I was a kid I was a Duncan guy all the way and never dig DiMarzio but from this clip it sounded pretty badass. The guitar arrives tomorrow. I will suss it out tomorrow.

I have a JB in one guitar, have a Super Distortion in another, and messed with a Duncan Distortion. Personally I feel the JB is slightly lower gain, smoother than the Super D and the JB is more neutral sounding. The Super D is a little more aggressive and boosted EQ sounding. The guitars are different enough so that comes in to play. If I'm playing Boston, Zep, or 70s type stuff I like the JB, but for heavier stuff (Randy Rhoads, EVH, Metallica) I prefer the Super D. The Duncan Distortion I didn't care for. Was tighter and much higher gain but just didn't really care for it. Nothing particular, but it was in a guitar I didn't like so that's probably why. But it mostly comes down to which guitar is in my hands at the moment, JB and Super D are my 2 favorite.
I read somewhere once something like "if you want to enhance the tone of your guitar use Duncans, and if you want to change the tone of your guitar use Dimarzios." Subjective but I tend to agree with it.

Wow this is getting strange. Just because I'm far removed from it doesn't mean I can't play the parts. Anyway guys I'm signing off. If anyone has any thing to help me with the pickups contact me on Facebook. It's time for me to move on.

I have no beef with James, but I completely agree with the above post. Well said and spot on.

Since he admits he is so far from the 80's it seems like the producers of the show chose the wrong person for the backup gig. I'm embarrassed for James posting this thread.
The mods need to check ip addresses and start banning people for multiple accounts. As for pickups, the Dimarzio At-1 is close to the Seymour JB, without the nastiness. I have one in my PRS and like it a lot.

Being late here and sorry to see the thread went strange. Anyhow, James I think the guitar gets you there and congrats on the job. One additional note: it might be (can't remember the exact song list of RoA) that you can't nail some of the sounds exactly. (Of course question is also how close you need to get)

Reason could be that some/many of them were recorded on basswood body guitars. Quiet unpopular wood choice today but was used a lot back in the days (and for good reasons). Sound much different than alder, ash or mahagony. Much more balanced with "80s high gain distortion". So if your sound has to much bite and high freqs you might give it a try. Again sounds very different too my ears and very 80s especially with a higher output PU....

https://www.rig-talk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=159335 Any of these would have been perfect. $300 for a Hamer Cali, thats a lot of guitar for that price.

Thanx for the plug bro!

I still don't know why the hamer Cali hasn't moved

concrats on the gig james, sounds like fun

and well done on picking the right guitar for the job ..... playing in an 80's show you use the gear they used so charvel is the perfect choice (followed closely by ibanez), hot rodded marshall, boss chorus, boss delay and a little verb and bam you have your 80's tone, no need for "boutique" stuff
