Just saw John Mayer tonight

I just got back from a John Mayer concert here in Detroit. My verdict: he was plain awesome. I'm extremely biased, but it was definitely amazing to see one of my idols shredding it up. The tone and playing was phenomenal...he was using two Two Rocks and his Dumble SSS, and switched guitars for almost every song. Played The Black One, his vintage sunburst Strat, a black Strat, another sunburst, the gold Vultures Strat, a couple Teles, plus an Alembic, a Duesenberg, and his Martin acoustics. The whole thing was just awesome. Thought I'd share! If you get a chance to see him, do it!



 
Not a fan, but glad you enjoyed it. That's what music is for.
 
Love it! John's often overlooked because of his pop tunes or personal life but man, when I finally got past that stuff and actually took the time to listen to him I was blown away. "Where The Light Is" is one of the best dvd/ live albums I've ever listened to. All 3 sets of sheer mastery.
 
I saw him a few years ago, he and his band are awesome live!!!
 
I think he's a fantastic guitar player but just can't stand his singing or the songs he writes.

The dude can play. Did you see him on one of the awards shows a bit ago where he stood at the mic with just a guitar going over various styles as he spoke? F me.

I think he was inducting Albert King? into the R'n'R HOF. He really showed some great depth on that one.
 
Mayer was the guy who actually got me into playing guitar around the time of my 18th birthday, about 10 years back. I started on a $180 Takamine acoustic when I heard "Neon" off of "Room for Squares". Up until that point in my life, I never heard an electric guitar sound like that because I grew up around kids listening to Nirvana, and I just didn't get it or any of the other crap they were listening to. I got the opportunity to meet Mayer,and unfortunately, the guy was a dick. Maybe he has grown up since then. I dunno. It kind of soured his music for me. Nevertheless, in a weird way, I'm still thankful for him being around to influence me in the very beginning. A couple of years later, I got my first Strat after Kage recommended that I listen to Jeff Beck. Mayer initially made me think, "wow, that's different". SRV's "Riviera Paradise" made me realize that Mayer wasn't so different after all, and then Beck's "Blow by Blow" made my head explode.

He is a Dick and wears strange clothes ..... come to think of it he sings weird too. :D
 
Saw him in Houston about a month ago. One of my favorite singer/songwriter/guitarist. Not for evryone I know. Most think he's an ass but I dig his playing and music. And dude is funny. Loved him on The Chappelle Show.
 
Awesome, he can really play. How was his voice as well? He's been recovering from nodes or something recently i think.

Actually sounded really good. He wasn't singing some of them as high (just the range, he can still do the falsetto), but he also said he had a cold which might be why. He was saying how even though it's bad show business to tell everyone he had a cold he was going to because it was awesome to have a regular cold instead of the crazy stuff he was dealing with for a while there! He was really appreciative to the audience and a funny guy. Everything about it was positive in my book.

Mayer can jam. Bad choice in swimwear.

i'm not so into his latest albums, but a lot of his songs/lyrics hit home for me and he's a hell of a guitar player to boot
 
I do like Mayer and he's doing a tribute in his own way, but that video just says to me "I know we're inducting Albert King into the RNR Hall of Fame, but check out MY playing instead"
