:dunno:

KISS [keep it simple stoopid]is a maxim I have recently been thrashed in the head with…..reacquainted with and forced to deal with.

My best friend is a renowned shred master, with a world wide following with several major thrash releases under his belt which he solely composed from the late 80's and is about to revive his band and career with a ridiculously heavy and brutal album with over the top rhythms and insane solo playing.

He spends ZERO time on ANY gear message boards and laughs at ALL gear heads in a fun loving way.He spends ALL of his time writing, composing and demoing when he is not working full time to support his family.
We both agreed a long time ago that tone is in the head, heart and hands and is COMPLETELY SECONDARY to creating timeless classic music in ANY genre.

The tones and production coming out of his demo studio are as good as if not better than….ANY CURRENT major metal releases.

Under nit picking microscopic scrutiny his unmastered "demos" are indiscernible from professional productions by brand name bands and producers.

I am stunned at the quality and consistency of his intensely heavy guitar tones and production.

All of this recorded at night after a long days toil at a shitty day job with a decent 3-4 guitar arsenal, none of which are more than 500.00 dollars at retail and a FUCKING LOWLY NON GAS UNWANTED UN SEXY peavy valve king combo.

Yup thats right a fucking valve king, something very few on this board would have the balls to post in their "gear signature".

So when i see all the guys on this board playing RATT or DOKKEN covers or bark at the moon with 15,000 dollars worth of gear or with their cover bands at local bars or in their basement I have to laugh and say-"hey good for them"
and then think…"what a fucking joke" but as long as they are having fun who cares?

Nothing wrong with hoarding gear ,whoring gear or "fretting" over the nuances of the latest CAMERON ccv drama or the differences between the multitudes of incredible "boutique"high gain amps now available to the common jerk, but damm in the end it's about shedding and shredding, theory, hard work and putting in time rehearsing and recording ,and gigging.

Of course to each their own and your mileage will vary and this is in no way shape or form a troll post or a dis to the denizens of GAS!

None the less you can squeeze the sickest tones and inspiration out of nothing if you have to….provided that you are a talented creative soul with vision and drive.

I hear what you're saying. In the end, it doesn't matter what you have, what matters is what you do with what you have.

For $500 used you can get a DSL. There's not a better amp in that price range period, especially for 80s metal.

Killer post

This epiphany makes me feel like I'm at the end of a Full House episode... In the first act I went all gear head with aspirations of a Def Leppard grossly too big rack but then Uncle Jesse sat me down and we had a heart to heart, him telling me I don't need all that stuff right now while that sympathetic synth track swells over us embracing... About now is when we cut to one of the Olsen twins spouting off some comedy relief to ease the heaviness of the last scene

You all are my John Stamos

...And somehow, John Stamos lands himself some monster tail.

So, gotta kinda take back a little pride here...

So as some of you know I'm not legal to play in bars yet so while playing in my bedroom I've had time to watch billions of rig rundowns and oggle gear on eBay and get sweet complex setups made up in my head thinking I'll be a badass gunslinger

Then recently I started jamming with some dudes who after the first jam said "Here's our set lists (Note the plural) the show is September 7th" (About 2 and a half weeks later for a good 3-4 hours of music)

So the band sneaks me in through the side of the bar to set my stuff up (A couple pedals and a half stack) and it was easier than I remember it. Tuning I was a told a big bass player in the San Diego area made his way over here (Salt Lake City) to jam with us. 30 minutes later we're all still waiting for him to set up his rack... And that's when I thought about my rack I was dreaming up in my head and had that epiphany... Fuck. I'm playing bars. My half stack can barely fit on this stage. Why the hell am I going to buy a big complex rack?

Upon watching some Steel Panther videos earlier today I noticed Russ was playing some 5153's and in front of him was an amp switcher, a tuner, a delay and a tube screamer... And god dammit... Satchel is playing bigger venues than I will and his rig is more simple than the "simple" one I was planning on making!

So, to all those suggesting I buy myself a nice tube amp instead of MIDI preamps, here's my pride, you're right.
Now, tube heads. I've always gassed for a 5150 or 5153 (Especially in white... But that just could be the Randy Rhoads fan in me) and it perked my wallet to see Russ from Panther using a 5150 and more recently a 53... Any other suggestions for just about $1000 tube amps to get me sweet hair metal tones? I'd say I'd wanna stay Marshall because I already have a 63 cab but my puppy decided the some of tolex looked better in her mouth or on the ground when I woke up today >.>
So sticking with Marshall isn't a necessity since I'll probably pick up a new cab anyway to take out on the road...

IMO it's very easy to get caught up in hype with a lot of amp gear. A good guitarist can plug into a 10" solid state combo amp with a decent clean and gain channel and do everything he needs with it with the exception of maybe a few fx. Admittedly, though, that same guitarist will likely sound that much better with a good tube amp setup.

Once one starts getting into decent tube amps, I think so many sound similar enough that very few people are going to notice much positive difference between one or another in a loud live mix, where an amp's ability to cut through might be more important than something like how aggressive it may sound. I think where those types of differences will be most noticed is in recording and jamming alone. Some will find a way to get the most out of any amp they plug into, though, and the cost difference and amount of complexity going into the rig is worth it to them. Sometimes it may take a few gigs to find what works best or at least a happy medium.

:dunno:

Agreed. But sometimes a new piece of gear can inspire both the player to spend more time playing as well as how the person plays and can even inspire other band members. That said, my best amp is a 6505+ through an '80s Carvin 412 cab, and my main guitars are MiM Fenders and an Epi LP. But it works for me. 8) I have to admit, I wish I'd have put as much time into writing and learning other music as I have in researching different types of gear.

Amen... But I do all my 13-year-old-discovering-Playboy guitar researching at work where I sit in a windowless room for 8 hours so practicing scales isn't something your lieutenant kinda frowns on

Imagine the musical prowess I'd possess if instead of scouring eBay for guitars I was sitting learning scales and theory? I sure as hell wouldn't use the pentatonic box as a bigger crutch than Ace ever did..

Thanks all for the inspiration and I think I have my rig set... I'm going to add a a few pedals into my loop (10 band as a solo boost to let my wah be a wah for once, set and forget chorus and a delay for when I need it) and I'm going to run that through a JVM205 (Shout out to Michi I believe for turning me on to that beast!) and get myself a Line 6 G50 on top of the amp to make guitar changes easier (the rest of the band doesn't quite understand why I need to do that)

Once I put it in a pedal board, I plug in a total of 6 cables (including amp power) and I'm set up... Simplicity feels good, can't wait to piece by piece adding these things to my rig!

And thanks but I think I'm going to be too simple that I won't need even that... The most I'd have to stomp would be at most 2 stomps, channel switcher (Typical clean bridge straight into solo) to boost or boost to delay, nothing too complicated that would need a looper
