Should arrive tomorrow. I ordered the rack version with foot controller. I got the non-powered version and am going to use an ISP Stealth Pro in the rack.

I have been hearing some great things about the Michael Britt profiles.

Any tips for a Kemper newb?

Congrats and welcome to the dark side!! I love my Kemper and I know you will also. Definitely join the Kemper Amps forums there are a lot of great people there and check out the Rig Exchange. Tons of different profiles loaded by users to check out. They have updated their effects quite a bit so you have are amazing so many pedals to choose from that you can assign to your rig as well as cabinet IR's. Enjoy.

NICE!! The stock profiles it comes with are not that great. I ended up making my own because I wasn't satisfied with what was out there (including most commercial profiles I've tried). There are some pretty good free ones nowadays on Rig Exchange.

check out tms and deadpan, they just recently put some really good free profiles up on the exchange. i use alot of britt's profiles and i play with the definition knob alot. webb (eleveneleven on rig exchange) has some good ccv profiles.

I also seem to bump up the amp level about 2db on all the rigs, it seems to bring them out a bit (i realize this is the fletcher/munson effect) but i even do it on live rigs thru a pa

also if your going to use it live, set up rigs for live use ie. at live volume.

morphing is a really cool feature, i bought 2 moog pedals for 40 a peice, they work great. I can set them to control delay level, gain level, all sorts of stuff

I put up a bunch of profiles a few years ago under "Chris O" - they were all take from my AxeFx, so if you want to have both the Kemper and the AxeFx... ;)

TAF and Lasse Lammert has some great ones available on the exchange. I wish I could remember the other ones, but I sold my Kemper about 2 years ago.

I will be following suit shortly...just starting out with the unpowered rack version for my desk. I have been very impressed by what I've heard from Top Jimi Profiles and Big Hairy Profiles (Rig Talk's own 'audiomichael')...

too much $$ for me lol..... if i get a modeler it'll be an 11rack for 650 lol

Man I want an AX8 or Kemper bad, but I hate having to readjust to tube amps after playing them for a while. I haven't tried Kemper since the very first ones, and I haven't played an AxeFX since the 2nd revision, so I don't know how far along they've come. If they can just get a real tube feel, that's kind of the selling point for me. I think they already sound real good.

You could buy a couple for that. If you're paying more than $300 for an 11R, you're paying too much.

i would buy a new one so i get the free pro tools download. if i ever buy one ...i have put my jvm up for sale a few times over the last few years (there are no bands to play in around here anyways lol) but nobody wants to pay anything decent for it. so i keep it lol...if i ever sell it i would probably just get an 11 rack

I'm thinking about getting a kemper amp too. Any recommendations on whether I should get a Kemper with a poweramp vs a non-poweramp? Also, is it better to get a rack version vs regular version?

Check out the free stuff first and download the Rig manager app where you can go through and sample them. It is a fun and very useful unit and makes recording very easy. I've had 3 of them over the past 4 years. 2 had issues but the 3rd unit was great!

Play with the stuff in the box first before you start buying profiles. There is quite a bit of great stuff in there. Don't go down the rabbit hole of finding the next best profile to buy. If you have access to some great mics and a studio and you have lots of amps, this is a great tool for you to take your amps with you if you are a touring pro.

The free rigs are getting better and better....

I'm happy to hook you up with some of my commercial profiles for free so you can compare....

Watch for my next video which will put the Kemper vs the BE-100 through the same cab.... :)

As for powered vs unpowered....I suggest powered as you can run a traditional cab or passive FRFR from the Kemper....I use my power out for an Egnater 2x12 and my main out for my powered FRFR for the best of both worlds....

Congrats on your buy!

Thanks Matt :)

I bought an unpowered but I bought a Friedman ASM-12 today to use with it from Jay Tagg.

I really want one for direct recording purposes... but was leaning towards the lunchbox head only because I hear the led/ring thing is helpful. So jealous man.... you gonna post some samples when you get it? ;)

I am running the same rig and love mine. I have a toaster head as a backup for gigs. I use Mbritt, BM, Top Jimi profiles and am really happy. The Mbritt profiles will come to life with a studio EQ in the X slot. Just a slight bump on the eq and they are pretty nice. It's not the same as a tube amp, but I got used to it very fast and am getting killer tones, at ALL gain levels.I am really getting into the low gain, tele type overdrives lately, and they are very nice. Some profiles are a bit more dynamic than others and respond to the volume knob on the guitar differently.

I have been hearing some great profiles. Especially the MBritt and Top Jimi profiles. I doubt I will need much more than that.

I have a bunch of great amps and every one of them is heavy as shit. I will be 48 on the 14th and I just can't carry that stuff all over the place anymore. Not to mention the wear and tear on the amps. I LOVE my amps. I am not going to sell them unless I have to... Lastly, I have gotten a lot of compliments on my sound even when I used the Helix. People cannot hear the difference. Only tone aware guitar players (I say tone aware because some guitar players have zero idea what makes a guitar sound good, apparently).

Here is the evolution I have gone through.

I bought a Helix and love the thing but I just haven't gelled with it. I still have it and it's fun to screw with. The most recent firmware updates have greatly improved it.

I bought an AX8 and I LOVE IT... except when it pisses me off by being so freaking complex yet limited by CPU.

I bought an Amplifire 12 and it's cool. It's simple. I don't think it sounds as good as the AX8. Some people might think differently. That's ok. I like the Amplifire for a practice piece because it isn't as bulky as the Helix and it has a headphone out. That is what I will likely be using it for, primarily. Too bad the AX8 doesn't have a headphone out... Fractal should be shot in the pinky toe for that.

I just paid off an Archon I bought from Zzounds and saw they had the Kemper available for payments now. I decided to get it with the floor controller.

I have seen a number of people live using all of the options above. I think the Kemper sounded the best live and some of the videos on youtube just sound amazing.

As far as low gain, even when I was playing in metal bands I preferred lower gain. Too much gain makes things fizzy and you lose definition in your notes. You get mush. At lower gain, you can still be aggressive in your rhythm playing but it won't wash the mix. A good amp and boost for solos is all you need.

A perfect example of this is Aaron Marshall. Say what you want, I think they have a great guitar tone on this record.

Back in the day, there were a lot of great guitar players that didn't use a lot of gain including Eddie Van Halen and George Lynch.

Most of what they had was that Plexi bite.

Intervals used a Kemper on that CD? They show AxeFX in their rack in the video. The last time Aaron showed his rig on youtube that I remember he was using AxeFX thru Engl's? It's been awhile since I checked. I was one of the few who likes that singer's voice. I don't like Intervals without vocals.

No, we were talking about low gain tone. I used them as an example.
